"Delete Emptied Folders" doesn't work

Post by jam*wil »

When I use auto-organize files, and select the 'Delete Emptied Folders' option, it still doesn't empty them, so I have to go through and delete a bunch of folders with nothing in them. Does anybody know why it's doing this?

I actually had the same problem recently. I don't know what the solution is though.

Anybody else? Any other information, like if it does always happen?

It seems that I have this same issue. I didn't bother looking at my actual folders until I read this post. For me, most of my empty folders are because I changed the artist name or album name inside of MM. This of course updates the ID3 tag of the MP3 file. I then did an Auto-Organize to place the files in their new/corrected location. The "Delete emptied folders" checkbox is/was checked. So, add one more to the list of those who can reproduce this issue.

That's 3 for 3, we should look into this issue!

I actually only auto-organized once within recent memory. I have no need to re-run it and it wasn't too difficult for me to clean up. I just had to delete about 10-12 top-level genre directories.

So, I don't have much insight into how to reproduce this or if it's a regular problem. If you need me to do some testing, let me know and I'll try to reproduce it on a test database.

Allthough I cannot confirm the problem you describe (delete empty folders works fine for me) i will give you a link for a freeware command-line utility that will remove all of the empty folders that MM or any other software has left behind.
One precaution though... dont run it on the root of the system drive, it works better (and safer) if you choose as the starting folder, the folder that contains your music files (e.g D:\MyMusic)
Here it is http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBL/tip5500/rh5538.htm

Hope it helps until your problem will be resolved...

OK. I played around with it and I think I see what is going on (for me at least). I did an experiment with my Green Day/American Idiot album. The original folder (based off of <Album Artist>\<Album>) was \\cs01\music\Green Day\American Idiot. In MM I selected all of the songs in the album and changed the Artist and Album Artist from Green Day to GreenDay (just removed the space). I then auto organized just those files. I ended up with a new folder structure as expected (\\cs01\music\GreenDay\American Idiot) and the American Idiot folder was removed from the original \\cs01\music\Green Day folder. However, the original folder still remained (\\cs01\music\Green Day) even though there are no other folders/files in it. American Idiot is the only album I have of Green Day's. So, MM is removing the folders to a point. It's just not doing a complete clean up. Same thing happened when I then changed GreenDay back to Green Day. I now have an empty \\cs01\music\GreenDay folder.

Hope this helps with tracking down the issue.

Ok, you are right, there were some problems with the logic, folders weren't sometimes removed even though one would expect them to be removed. This will be fixed in MM 2.5.

Thanks,
Jiri
