NPR podcasts in MM now have filenames in place of titles

Post by ObiQuiet »

Symptom: Some, but not all, podcasts downloaded from NPR queries have their Title fields changed to their filenames by MM upon completing the download.

Example query:
http://api.npr.org/query?requiredAssets ... wZWYxZQ001

What I see: Before download, the TItle property correctly shows the title of the story, from the <title> tag.
After the download is complete, I see the Title instantly replaced with the base file name (e.g. "20120210_tmm_02" aka "yyyymmdd_pgm_seq").

Note that the XML RSS has the correct title, and AFAICT this base filename string only appears in the XML as part of the enclosure URL, and then only with the .MP3 extension too. So, perhaps MM4 is picking it up from within the MP3 file?

Note also that the on-disk file name DOES use the <title> string, as MM4 is configured to do. It's just that the MM4 title field changes to >20120210_tmm_02". Oh, and the Genre changes to "Blues" too.

This started happening on Feb 4th. It does not happen with all NPR downloads.

What I have done, still happens:
1. Turn off "Infer track data from file names"
2. Upgraded from build 1461 to 1462.

My guess: Could NPR have started populating the MP3 title tag with the filename, in the file? (anyone else notice?)

If so, is there a MM4 setting that can overcome this?
If not, where else do I look?

Thanks!

On download, tag episodes based on data from Podcast feed in each Podcast Properties. I have it enabled on 4.0.3.1473 and the Title is still Title after download for linked Podcast.

Is there a way to fix this after having downloaded the podcast?

I have this same issue of the filename being listed as the title for hundreds of podcasts. I originally downloaded the podcasts with Juice. Windows recognizes the actual title in the mp3 tag, but MM only lists the filename. This causes 2 problems with MM:

-When you transfer the podcast to a device, the original title is lost and replaced with filename.
-If you edit anything in the tag (for example, change Type from "Music" to "Podcast"), MM automatically changes whatever is listed in 'title' to the filename, regardless of whether you want to change the title or not.

I only noticed this problem after editing a batch of a few hundred mp3s and losing all of the accurate and useful titles.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the suggestion. My issues is actually the reverse of what "Auto-Tag from Filename" would solve.

Here's what Windows shows for one particular podcast:
Filename: 2008-04-17-sysk-grassoline.mp3
Title: How Grassoline Works

Here's what MediaMonkey shows:
Filename: 2008-04-17-sysk-grassoline.mp3
Title: 2008-04-17-sysk-grassoline

If I edit another part of the tag in MM (e.g. "Genre") by right click > "Properties," the Title, as shown by Windows Explorer, is permanently changed to "2008-04-17-sysk-grassoline."

I could use another mp3 tag editing utility to change the Filename to "How Grassoline Works.mp3" but that might cause other issues. For example the Title "Can I Survive a Shark Attack by Gouging Out Its Eyes?" has a "?" which is invalid in a Windows filename. I would also prefer to keep the filename shorter than a full sentence.

What I would really like is a way for MM to recognize the actual mp3 Title.

Thanks again for the help.

Looks like I just solved my problem.

File > Add/Rescan Files > Options :

Uncheck "Infer File Properties"

Hope that helps someone else
