auto tagging from web sources (Amazon????)

Post by mynetdude »

It seems to me MMW only offers Amazon as a choice; granted there's Amazon.com, UK, Germany, a few others well... uh there's a lot more music available than you'd expect Amazon to have. Is there a way to add more sources? I've got an unknown artist; I know who it is; but I can't tag it or find the album art... err well how would you do it manually then???

To sum it up my questions are: 1. can I get/add more sources to auto tag from?

2. can I do it manually? And how?

Here's what I do when I can't find the album art on Amazon. I try to find it somewhere; artist website, wikipedia, internet search. Once found, I right click on it and save to a folder I use for this.

Then open MM, click on song(s), click edit properties, go to Album Art tab, click add, go find the file you just saved, click on it and click Open, edit property calling it Cover Art, Back or whatever you use, check box on bottom left to "Apply to all files...", click OK. Only way I know to do it and thankfully Amazon finds 99%.

True it does find a lot; is there an international music database similar to IMDB for movies?

And what about importing other artist info? And song/track titles?

I don't know about importing, I only use what is native to MM and then work around it. Hopefully, others chime in to help.

A good source for album art is allmusic.com. Click on the album cover for a large version, then right-click and copy and then in MM right-click and paste on the artwork tab (remove any existing images). cduniverse.com also has cover art for many releases. Discogs also has good album art - often several different covers for an album from different releases. You can also search Album Art Exchange http://www.albumartexchange.com/. None of it I should say is automatic, but in my experience all automatic gets you is inferior cover art whether in MM, iTunes or other programs.

how do you mean "inferior"? You're talking about the album art quality? Most of the ones imported automatically by the built in auto tagging (I think MM auto tags when importing new tracks if the data is available for it). Perhaps auto importing isn't the best, but it would still be nice to have all those links/tools right in MM but bookmarking them will just have to do :D

My guess is that by 'inferior' they mean simply lesser quality. If any program goes to a site they are restricted by that sites graphics. If i have, say, Blind Faith and autotag it will go out and get what ever is available. There are some 'multiples' available but most of the time the scans really don't have the resolution. True this is really a subjective thing but I tend for larger art work .. that can be show bigger than a thumbnail. If you do a google search (google is your friend :) ) for Blind Faith then click on Images you will see a wealth of images to pick from. You can pick the size/resolution you want.

This is true for the data etc. Although I use a different program than MMW to tag my files, most of the time it still requires some serious typing/searching/editing to get all the data correct.

I was looking for a standalone tagging app until I realized MMW had the ability to do it, its a pain to find the correct info including lyrics and yes I've read a number of threads about how silly lyrics and music rights are kept separate and its up to the Artist/publisher to include them or not.

But if you buy directly from the Artist/publisher sometimes you can get a lot of better stuff than you can find via random searches and you'll have to do even less tagging.
