I could be wrong but it looks like that developer stopped trying to fix it over 2 years ago.

I use the earliest release date plugin, viewtopic.php?f=2&t=66766&start=150

You can use Original Date for this while leaving Date for the date the CD was released. I'm not sure if there is an Addon that accurately tags Original Date.

Hello,

Sorry if this is old stuff but I'm new to media monkey and really don't know much about it yet. I have a folder with about 1200 FLAC files. They all have the artist and song title but I'd love to add the original record date for the song by that artist. So even if it is a Beatles remastered album from 2009 or so it shows the date of 1966 or whenever the Beatles first sang the song. This way I can organize song by decade if I like.

Thanks for the suggestions, Music IP has been well and truly abused, there's no more info I can get out of that:)

As for the link to the Discogs Earliest Original Date Script.....Yessssssssssssss!!! :)

This is exactly what all us Original daters need.

I don't know what the etiquette is between scripters etc so forgive me if I'm talking out of turn, but the basic concept of what this guy has done seems so simple and could surely be applied across other sites. Just running it against my own library would negate the need for the duping/cut and paste method I asked about and which you replied.

It is so basic and cumbersome but absolutely perfect for what it is trying to achieve:)

I must of trawled through at least 10 old threads regarding solving this problem, but never found this because it doesn't refer to original date.
Is there a way to make it better known to people so the guy who's trying to write the script can hopefully get some help with it that he is clearly asking for?

Thanks so much for pointing me towards it.

It's accuracy is of course down to how much effort you put in.

Yes, the addon "Advanced duplicate find and fix" has a 'Copy/paste' metadata feature (which fields are copied and pasted to other tracks is configurable) so it would be possible with that. http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... +duplicate

On an unrelated note someone made this addon as well, though I've never used/tried it: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... ginal+year

I don't a fully automatic 100% accurate method exists. Have you tried the MusicIP Tagger: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... cip+tagger

I wondered if there had been any advances on what the original OP was after.
Discogs is great for Albums/12's but not for individual tracks (unless they were released as a single)
I've tried using the Picard plugin but got 100% fail on the years I was trying to find. Not even a release date on some:(
Not the plugins fault I know.

I guess I'm asking the same as anyone else.
A way of auto tagging the original years on a compilation.

Is there a script that would at least match tracks in my library and then allow me to copy original year from track A to original year on track B. That would solve a few problems.

Otherwise Ive been using the Wikipedia route, if no joy there, then just googling the individual tracks. It's pretty soul destroying.

I appreciate the info is out there but never in a standard place to collect it from.
Oh well, I await any suggestions.

netmatt, have a look in the musicbrainz forum as there will be some answers there and ask a question there if you still have issues explaining what is not working for you. generally once the plugin is installed and enabled in picard it just works.

I was looking into that Picard thing, and I was able to install the plugin, but have no idea how to make the plugin work. The link to that guide points out the configuration, but not how to actually make the plugin work?

glad you found a solution that worked for you, but to address some of the issues you had, if you set all the Tag Limits to 0 in the general options the plugin will only then get the original date tag if available and the normal musicbrainz info, the original date function is hard coded in the plugin and cannot be changed in the options. and yep it does not work for every track though does more than 75% here. for newer releases where original release year is the same anyway the release date will be copyed to original date tag to have something in there.

Thanks anyway but I just ended up inputting the tags manually. It didn't take that long using Wikipedia as my reference. Your way seemed a little too complicated and it wouldn't let me put just the Original Date tag in. I tried it on one song and it changed all the tags and I didn't see an option to input just the one tag I needed. It also didn't find the original date for some of the songs.

I'm afraid it is. Actually, for what I know, there's no way to do it automatically.

Original date is not accurate on most sources so you have to find one you can rely on.
Discogs.com comes to mind.
Alright, thanks. I actually found that Wikipedia is a good source of information on songs (Incl. the original recording date). See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaze_of_Glory_(song)

and

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Born_to_be_wild

The yellow box on the right of the page has a lot of good info.
