You could also try Track Redirection & Synchronization add-on if you want to copy tags from the one set of tracks to the another one:
1. choose Tools \ Track Redirection \ Create Redirections/Copy Metadata... option;
2. select Folders radio button;
3. specify Master folder (with old files);
4. specify Copy folder (with new files);
5. select tracks which you want to syncronize (if you click on the left topmost check box you would get selected all contained tracks);
6. click on the Synchronize button.

The requirements are that both sets of tracks (old and new) should be previously entered into the Library (e.g. using Add/Rescan Tracks to the Library option) and both sets of tracks should have exactly same file names, e.g. "03 - blah blah.flac" and "03 - blah blah.mp3".

You could synchronize more than one album at once as long as you have same folder structure with old and new files, e.g. for old files:
c:\My Music\Lossless\Rock\Pink Floyd\The Dark Side of the Moon\xxx.flac
c:\My Music\Lossless\Rock\Pink Floyd\Wish You Were Here\xxx.flac

and new files:
d:\My Music\Compressed\Rock\Pink Floyd\The Dark Side of the Moon\xxx.mp3
d:\My Music\Compressed\Rock\Pink Floyd\Wish You Were Here\xxx.mp3

you should specify:
Old folder: c:\My Music\Lossless\
New folder: d:\My Music\Compressed\

You could select which tags you want to copy to new files (Title, Artist, ...) in the Tools \ Options dialog box on the Track Redirection tab.

Check out the advanced duplicate find and fix script. It provides everything requested in this thread.

Add me to the list of users who would love to have a re-rip option. I'm re-ripping my collection to flac but having to re-enter ratings, album covers, and meta data is a PITA.

I guess you say this just because of your bias against any user-created scripts. Hard to see any other reason since you have given no legitimate reasons that this script doesn't meet the request outlined in this thread.

Indeed. By "best" I was giving it the benefit of the doubt.

Hard to see how right click -> Copy metadata, right click -> Paste metadata is "not easy or straightforward".

I also have to say that Bex's script is quite easy and great to use, especially as I'm currently going about replacing my (what once was) 100% mp3 library to FLAC by ripping and re-ripping my CDs. Copying the metadata from the old mp3 album to the new FLAC tracks is absolutely painless, and takes about 10 seconds an album.

It does not. It is at best a workaround for the lack of the feature suggested. And one that is apparently "not exactly easy or straightforward, and in fact its downright annoying".

Bex's advanced duplicate find and fix script basically already meets the requirements of the features suggested here.

I cannot see how that is going to meet requirements. What will is for MM to simply copy the tags from a specified pre-existing library album to the correspondingly-numbered filenames of the newly ripped album. Leaving the user to delete the pre-existing album if/when required.

One of the reasons that not many people will go ahead and rerip is how much extra work they face. If this a re-rip feature were built in, making it a much more painless process, many more would do it.

When I used MMJ, I would rip the CD to a different directory and then just copy the tracks over the old ones. This fooled MMJ, but resulted in tracks that didn't have all the tags.

I've re-ripped a few albums to flac with dbpoweramp r12 refernece, then used bex's advanced duplicate finder script to migrate playcounts and such.

It is not exactly easy or straightforward, and in fact its downright annoying if your wanting to a large amount of replacements.

But I would hazard a guess that since bex's script can handle it, that a better, more streamlined script could be done.

One other option, but a still time consuming and requires as much work as using bex's script:

Convert the files you already have to the format you want (ie mp3 to flac), rip your cd's to a different location but with the same filenames (this is the annoying part). Then shut down MM and move the newly ripped files overwriting your previously converted files (they obviously must have the same name). After that, start of MM and 'sync' the database to the new files.

The easiest way to make your existing files and your newly ripped files consistent is to use musicbrainz picardqt to tag them all the same.

Too late for me, but this would have amazingly useful a few months ago.

There are many, many requests on the list. Daily several are added. The feature that is requested here is probably a feature for a few people (not many people will go ahead and rerip) so it's probably not high on the todo list. This is unfortunately the way it works. We all have some wishes about MediaMonkey that have been on the wishlist for the last several versions. Some wishes will eventually find itself into MediaMonkey and others won't.

Maybe this feature can be handled by a script. Any thoughts scripters?

Any news?

I don't want to be a PITA, but the official wishlist is even older than this thread...

Now FLAC encoding is working in MM, but several releases further there is still no option to easily convert your MP3 collection to FLAC by re-ripping without manually correcting all tags.

I know that "when"-questions in software development are somehow stupid, but nevertheless, I can't resist:

Are there any plans available about when we can hope to see such a feature?

I mean, come on, we can get tag info from FreeDB, from Amazon and elsewhere, but why not right out of the existing local database itself?

One option to implement this would be to add an option when you right-click on an album title like: "Re-Rip this album". Then the usual dialog for ripping and finally a dialog asking to insert the correct CD into the drive (or the other way round).

Is that really too much to ask?

I agree, this would be a huge feature for me. I have my CD collection mirrored on hard drive via the "Virtual CD" feature and as each of the 2k or so CDs is added to Virtual CD I add a ton of additional info to the db - every artist performing on the track, where available, etc.

I would love to be able to convert over to a lossless format - especially with the FLAC support avaiable in the beta. But, I don't want to lose the massive data I've entered regarding all those tracks. Ideally I'd go through and re-insert each CD and hit Ctrl-H, and it would just re-encode them to FLAC and set the available tags according to what's in the db now.

Has there been any word on if this will ever happen?
