Actually, what I did was to switch from Joliet to UDF to get around the limit.

But really, for a mass audience, shouldn't MediaMonkey offer auto-truncating for burning CDs rather than switching the encoding scheme (which most people don't understand) or hacking the program, which few people know how to do, and even fewer people want to do?

From a user-interaction perspective, the best thing would be to pop up a message that "filenames will be truncated to 60 characters. (button: [OK?] button: [Cancel] You may manually edit filenames to 60 characters or less, or use UDF encoding, to avoid this limit."

You can use $Left(<Filename>,60) to limit the filename to 60 characters. This can be used on other fields to.

yep that type of music has too long of file names. the 64 limit also includes the .mp3 in the name so it is really a 60 limit for the name.
i've only had some luck with changing the names on the burn list, but mostly i have to go in to the explorer and rename the file myself.
but i've been able to use auto organizer on the tool menu. to fix them by copying and changing the location of the of the file and having it rename to a different name.
then going to make the burn list, then when it is burned i delete the one i changed the name on and keep the one in mm's library as the real name so mm is not messed up.

Issue 0002242: long fileneames and Burn CD Wizard

(I am posting this here as this is the first time I have run into this issue, and I am using MediaMonkey Gold 4.0.4.1511 on a new Win8 PC)

This has been discussed years ago:

http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=2242

When using the Burn CD Wizard, I see the following error message:

"Duplicates and overly long filenames highlighted. Please edit them."

The above-reference discussion suggests that, if one goes to Tools > Options > Confirmations, and checks the box for "Confirm rename options for filenames that exceed 64-character CD limit." that these files will be automatically renamed. Nope. The Burn CD Wizard dialog box insists that you edit them manually, and the Next button is grayed out. And, the only way I found even that possibility was be a Google search to find the bug/issue report discussion on Mantis.

I tried editing the automatic filename to be just <filename> but some of the Renaissance music I was trying to burn has filenames longer than 64 characters, so I need auto-truncating, but it seems not to be there, as far as I can tell, despite the discussion reference above.

[BTW, when I have a playlist up, why are there two menu bars, both with "Tools" on them? (The main menu bar _and_ the menu bar below it.) What an opportunity for confusion and error! The menu item on the lower menu bar really should be renamed, as it leads to completely different options than the other "Tools"!]

Thanks for any thoughts.
