I did the following:
1. Uninstall MMA
2. Remove the files in the "files" subfolders, both on the external card and on the internal card (believe these are storageinfo and a database file).
3. Reboot
4. Reinstall MMA
I also tried using MMW to remove all playlists, then added two test playlists with 10 tracks each. After a lengthy rescan (something like 35 minutes), I am unable to see the test playlists, but still see entries for the playlists I removed (MMA correctly identifies these as empty). Of course I can verify that the test playlists are on the device, and the old playlists are not. Navigating to Artists, Albums, and Tracks, things are fine, but navigating to genres gives me a grey screen (like if I click on audiobooks - I don't have any - I've probably never done that before so it is unclear to me if this is new behavior or not).
