1) That's to be expected (you can't use a closed program), unless you installed the MediaMonkey Service (make sure it's installed as the same Windows User as MediaMonkey).
2) Check your Media Server settings including shared content and auto-conversion rules (most clients won't display items they can't play) under Tools > Options > Media Sharing. Also be aware that some clients section server content into Photos, Audio and Video and won't display items not pertaining to the selected segment (no audio files from the server will be shown when browsing the video segment on the client).
