I have a related challenge and solution (almost). My library has 35k flac songs and needs a TB drive to store it. I have a Nexus 7 (2013). I got OTG cables and a USB OTG cable powered drive. I sync the 800gb of files to the TB external drive (really a laptop drive in a nice small case) and let MMA scan the drive as if it were attached. I use a custom Android rom/kernel and StickMount to allow MMA to see the drive and after 24 hours or so, MMA has scanned the files and away I go in my car. Basically, you need all OTG OS, OTG cables and a OTG device for any sizable collection of music.
I've got several MMA tickets open that are pointing to bugs in MMA when it comes to OTG attached devices. It keeps on destroying the database that takes a day to build when I gracefully shut the unit down. Not a great setup, but once this is figured out, I'll have a sweet setup in my car.
I didn't really answer your question other than to agree you can't sync NAS from MMW, which led me to a device to plug into my car stereo using all OTG devices that in turn point to what looks like a defect in MMA for huge OTG libraries.
