It seems that i should have had the two 'compatibility' items checked in the sync. settings.

So now I can play songs, but the album art doesn't display.

Yes in MM, the artwork displays fine (embedded in file) from both the library and ipod nodes.

The ipod also reports incorrectly the number of songs and videos (should be nil) yet the space available is shown correctly.

Anyone have any ideas??

I have tried updated the device database as you suggested.
I also had "update database based on all track changes" selected.

Neither of those have made any difference.
Try this: enable the "compatibility settings" (iPod default file structure and 31-character filename limit). And then do a rebuild device database (doesn't take that long).

maybe the ipod database isn't updated correctly. you can do that manually by right clicking on the ipod node. in the menue you can choose "update the device database" (or similar).
i had a similar problem on my photo when i started with MM. in the synch options under the "device configuration" tab there is a radio button "update database based on all track changes". since i choosed that the synching works fine for me.

maybe this helps

sync. problem, ipod 5G, songs zero length or not listed

MM 2.5.2, ipod 5G with 1.1.1, library 5000+ 30gig.

OK this is very frustrating. I'm no dummy but this problem is making me feel like one! I restored the ipod and tried to automatically sync the entire 30gig library. Firstly the songs and playlists are listed, but all the songs seem to be zero length. I tried another automatic sync and now the ipod reports the capacity available right as if the songs are there, but they are not listed at all - no playlists either.

Further, in the tree node of MM for the ipod, all the songs are listed and they play fine. Further syncs with updated songs, etc seem to work fine but the songs are still not listed on the ipod - even though they seem to be there.

Any suggestions appreciated... or I go back to using dumb itunes - but at least the sync works...
