Actually, I think I figured out steps to reproduce.
In a location sub node viewing files with the following folder structure => Album Artist \ Album, first right-click on an album in the tree pane and select auto-tag. Note the correct column widths. Cancel or OK.
Now, right-click on an album in the tree pane and select auto-tag. You should get a dialog box with no files shown. Cancel.
Finally, right-click on the album you previously clicked in the tree pane and select auto-tag. The column widths are set to maximum widths.
I have not tested it, but I suspect if you have library files in the artist folder in this scenario the problem probably will not happen. I think the lack of music files in that directory is what's causing this.
