This method from "almo9004" was successful for me :D . I am using a keyboard with a "QWERTZ" layout and the German system language. It appears to be a translation issue or a reference error for the keyboard in use. When reassigning the Hotkey "Space" by pressing the "Spacebar", the label "LEER" appeared for me.

No, I did not know about those settings. Or at least I had forgotten about them... Thanks for the tip.

There might be a localization bug here. I went to the Hotkeys and saw that "Playback: Play/Pause" was already assigned to "Space". However, pressing space in the main window did not actually play/pause. I then went back to Hotkeys and redid the assignment. When I pressed Space in the Edit hotkey field, it showed up as "BLANKSTEG" (space in my Swedish locale). After hitting Apply and OK, the hotkey started working. There might be multiple factors involved in this bug: Swedish locale + having migrated the settings from MM4 (which I did).

Did you try setting it as a Hotkey under Tools > Options > Hotkeys?

Prior to version 5, I was able to press the space bar in the main window to pause or resume playback. This was very useful as an accessibility hotkey so I did not have to move my mouse to the pause/play button to do the same. In version 5, pressing space bar in the main window does nothing. Please bring this useful feature.
