I noticed Ludeks comment on bug 20581 "when no file is selected then 'Entire Library' is exported.."

I think I would have preferred that the contents of the main window be chosen by default, ie search, playlist, or whatever, or "all tracks" if that is showing.

Is it not most likely the user would like a report on what he is currently looking at?

Of course, you could get fancy and offer options in the "choose fields" dialog:

Choose source:

"Main Window []"
"Now playing []"
"Selection []" If applicable
Good point added as https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view ... 581#c74152

FYI I found another case when it does not work. Added as https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=20585

Hi,
That is complicated as MM will not know which list to use eg. TRack browser (Main) or Now playing, ...

Another possible solution would be if no files are selected, to automatically select the entire main window as displayed.

IE if I choose to run a report without first selecting specific files, it would automatically assume I want to report on what is currently displayed.

Hi,
Yeah #20581 address this to make it more easily accessible, I personally more liked dialog that inform no files selected.

I use the File Report function all the time. After a string of these sort of incautious selection states before firing off the report I am now habituated to selecting the entire list (Tree > Entire Library > All Tracks then Edit > Select all) before firing off the report, but I do see how covering for simple list selection mistakes on the part of new users would offer a smoother path to adoption.
Cheers

If I select the command file, reports, file list with nothing selected, nothing happens.

This may make sense to some, but other may thin k the command has failed, expecting a report on what is displayed in the main window.

It would be useful if this command produced an error message "Select files first", or better yet, an option to proceed using the entire display. - OK/cancel...
