Oh, and the questions, of course!
- at one point you indicated that you were sometimes syncing via the MMW service and other times via MMW. Does the issue occur when you sync consistently (e.g. never using the MMW service)?
I'll have to test this. I did just find that having MMW open just now, MMA couldn't find the server (so I started the service, and it instantly connected). Things look to have worked on that one.
- are you always doing a wi-fi sync?
Yes.
- were all your tracks on the device running MMA synced via MMW? Or is it possible that some were manually copied (e.g. via Windows Explorer)?
All Wi-Fi sync from MMW → MMA, none manually copied.

Sorry about that! I lost this window and got busy.

Here are my rules (I run a couple playlists with mild variations on this, but never use limits or select by for them):

Playlist: 2020 and Unplayed
Search: Simple No Redundant (an already filtered library, I can provide those rules as well)
Match: ALL
Playlist is not: Redundant, Stuff to Edit
Last Played is unknown
Date between (1/1/2020;1/1/2021)

Limit to: <unselected>
Selected by: <unselected>
Sort by:
Album Artist A..Z
Date A..Z
Album A..Z

I haven't been able to replicate the sync failures you described. BUT, I did find that the status bar for MMA Playlists failed to update the track count (even though the playlists updated as expected). This is just a display refresh issue, though.

Tracked at https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=21857

I'm going to continue testing with different Playlist / Sync settings, but if you can provide me with yours, it'd save a lot of time. Thanks!

Hi,

I haven't tried replicating this yet (plan on working on this soon) but can you share the auto-playlist's rules here? I'd like to know the full set of rules, including whether you used the 'Limit to' option and what 'Selected by' option you used.

Also, can you clarify a couple of issues for me:
- at one point you indicated that you were sometimes syncing via the MMW service and other times via MMW. Does the issue occur when you sync consistently (e.g. never using the MMW service)?
- are you always doing a wi-fi sync?
- were all your tracks on the device running MMA synced via MMW? Or is it possible that some were manually copied (e.g. via Windows Explorer)?

UPDATE: Can you also share your sync rules?

Thanks!

Definitely something de-syncing.

I just "fast-played" (accelerated to the tracking point) on MMW, and watched things drop off the playlist there.

Synced: no change in MMA, files still in playlist.

Check the file properties for those tracks in MMA: still says last played 10/17/25 (10 days ago).

Double-check MMW: yep, still counted as played—and on a different date (today!)

So somehow these files got "disconnected" from their relationship to each other. The same track is no longer being recognized as the same for some reason, they're orphaned in MMA (well, I guess that's an arbitrary distinction because I consider MMW to be "home"...but they're orphaned somewhere!)

Definitely something extra interesting going on.

I synced earlier, and a bunch of tracks were deleted from MMA (because I sync by these playlists, and I'd played the tracks).

I synced a bit later...and the tracks got re-downloaded. Checked MMW, and they were suddenly showing as last played "never" again.

No cancellations in-between on this one—but the first sync was via the Windows service, and the next was after opening MMW proper. Maybe some kind of de-sync between the MMW service and the actual application?

Just for a little specificity: https://imgur.com/a/4ButTwh

These are taken from the same playlists. They update on both ends—maybe this plays a role?

This is all "recently added to the library and not yet played" (a few other more "stable"/"neutral"/"manual" filters like exclusion from playlists).

So:

MMW adds to the playlist as I introduce more into the library
MMA (generally) subtracts from the playlist as I play things

Other possible contributors:

[*] Yesterday (between syncs) I was playing some of the newest unlistened stuff on MMW
[*] I think I may have canceled another sync a few days or so ago? I have only the "feeling" that I may be contributing to my own problem here still.

This seemed to be resolved (enough?) for me for a while, but right now I've got a playlist of "unplayed" things (based on whether "Last Played" is "unknown")

MMA shows a "Last Played" on many of these.
MMW does not on the same tracks.
Sync currently says "Everything is in sync"

It's possible I was seeing a mix of the regression you're referring to with this issue as well, but I'm definitely out of sync.
Bluesky wrote: Wed Sep 24, 2025 3:52 am Sync is only copying metadata for tracks that I have played since the last time I sync'd. Sync evidently ignores the tracks that were played in MMA prior to the previous sync, even if their Last Played date is more recent than MMW and their Playcount is higher than MMW.

So, I assume Sync Analysis doesn't consider the Last Played date in MMA, but instead only looks at tracks that MMA marks with some invisible flag as Played since last sync. Maybe that method is faster than checking the Last Played date, but flawed if it leads to incorrect data in MMW.
I haven't parsed the data to this level, but it "feels" reasonable to me; there's a sense that there's some kind of "gap" in the recording of last played, where if I miss a window, it falls into that gap, never to be recovered.

I've occasionally solved it by just muting my Windows audio and playing a manually created playlist overnight...obviously not ideal!

I did just try finishing out playing the track I was on, and it was removed from MMW when I synced again, but the dozens of other tracks are still not syncing—when I check MMA's properties for these tracks, I can see the "Last Played" date on them.

The bug in which Play history / Play count sometimes fails to update is fixed in MMA 2.1.0.1278.

Can you confirm whether it solves the problem for you?

Yes, I think this is what's happening in my case. When I look at the properties of the played file in MMA it lists 0 play count and last played never.

I think that there are 2 issues being reported here:
1) MMA fails to update play count/play history in some cases. This is a regression in 2.1.0 that occasionally occurs when Gapless playback is enabled. It has been fixed in 2.1.0.1278 which has been released to beta testers and is currently rolling to all other users.

2) Sync fails to update Playcount/Play history (even when the count is accurate in each of MMA and MMW). We haven't been able to replicate this issue.

Thanks!

I have also recently started experiencing this issue. I'll play a whole album on MMA and then sync with MMW and it shows only e.g. tracks 1,4,5,6,7,8 played. Just missing like 2 in the middle.

Can you both confirm whether the playcount/history actually updated correctly in MMA?

There was another report from a user that with the introduction of the new audio engine in MMA 2.1.0, the play history is occasionally not updated (we haven't been able to replicate this), so I wonder whether that could be the root cause.

/EDIT - my separate thread doesn't exist. Posted my update in this thread.

Update:
I have gone through all my tracks played this year on MMA, and manually copied the playcount from MMA to MMW since Sync wasn't updating the metadata for these tracks in MMW. Not ideal. But at least they are now accurately showing the number of plays in my "master" list in MMW.

Sync is only copying metadata for tracks that I have played since the last time I sync'd.

Hey,
Was this resolved? I have exactly the same issue as FangsFirst described.
I have created it in my own thread here: https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewt ... p?t=108553
Thanks.
