I have also used MM for a long time, and found that for most of that time it has been remarkably prone to resetting tailored column views. MM has always had an option to define your own views, unfortunately it was also prone to resetting those to whatever you last did on the screen, or back to basic defaults. Fortunately, the latest versions are far better at respecting view definitions.
I have learned that a bit of discipline can save me from most of the hassle:
1. Define your own views via the Manage Views option in the pulldown of the list widget at top of screen just to the left of the right hand search box. Note that you can now define the scope of that setting via Tools > Options > Library > Fields & Columns. That defaults to "Each Node in each Collection", but you might want to try "Each Collection" if you are looking for some more consistency.
2. Be aware of which view you are using when changing column settings. If you want views to update, select a default list from the list pulldown. If you want view updates to be limited to the view you are modifying, select one of your defined views.
My expectation is that the default views auto-update when you move columns around (I'm happy to be corrected), but if you are using one of your defined views you have a better chance of on-the-fly column updates not changing the definition of your named column settings for other views/tabs, though I have found that still happening in a couple of cases. It appears that managing column settings reliably is still a work in progress.
Cheers
