Streaming my library?

Is there a way for Media Monkey to stream my library to people outside my network (or even in it)?

I've been looking at all kinds of solutions out there like Orb, TVersity, Subsonic and several others and each of them has major issues to overcome to make this work well.

I'd really like anyone (mainly ME while on the road) to be able to use any browser, go to my PC (I use a dynamic IP redirector so it's just a nice simple URL) and play my library. The one big hurdle is that I need transcoding to go from FLAC to MP3 on the fly as playing FLAC over the network which is likely going to be limited (often wireless when traveling) will be an issue.

I can't be the only one wanting this.

MediaMonkey can't do this. I had developed WebMonkey for MediaMonkey 2.5 that would be able to do this, but otherwise I'm not sure there is a MediaMonkey based solution. There is also Shoutcast as an option. A big issue when streaming from you own PC is how much upload bandwidth you have available.

There are/were also online services that allow you to upload your music and listen to it from any location via the internet.

Alternatively, you could set up a copy of Monkey on a portable HDD and take it with you. This setup has the exe, Db and library on the same drive. Obviously, this would be a copy and would need to be periodically updated. See the Portable Monkey Wiki page:

Neither approach is optimal. I already carry my library around on an iPod but it's really compressed. In FLAC we're talking well over 100GB and no one is going to be anywhere near free to give up that kind of space for me to stream it from. Oh well.

But a portable drive is pretty cheap these days. You can get 250GB WD passport for under $100. good luck!

I tried it. It was terrible.

Frankly, the best tool I've found for this is one that impresses everyone I show it to called JukeFly.

It hooks into your library and makes it available anywhere anytime and includes hooks to videos for nearly every song and full lyrics, etc. Great program with real support behind it.

Personally the best results I get when using Standalone EDCast, MediaMonkey and up-streaming Encoded output to some IceCast servers.

sorry to bump an older thread, but I just recently came across subsonic and its freaking awesome streaming from my NAS (running subsonic) to my android phone (running subsonic client).

I tried this out a few years ago and found it, at that time, entirely unapproachable. Has it gotten any more intuitive?

I found JukeFly at the time and it's been fantastic but their Android app is an alpha version that's extremely buggy. The main client is fantastic with lyrics, videos, etc.

well I never used it before, so I can't tell how much it has improved, but it seems pretty slick to me.

the only problem so far is I need to increase the default memory due to my huge library.

Thanks for the suggestion! Subsonic is great. I've overlooked many of these pseudostreaming/streaming apps/services but this does exactly what I need. Super simple setup on my Ubuntu NAS.
