Sort by function neglected in MM5 [#16311]

Post by Davo »

There have been quite a few posts about this issue but little or no response from MM. So i am putting this question directly to the MM Team.

Q When will a comprehensive sort function be implemented for all views.

At the risk of stating the obvious a decent sorting function is an essential part of any database & I would expect that it was included in the original specifications & already implemented.

I appreciate that the developers are working hard, But there are also quite a few unpaid Subject Matter experts/Testers out there spending a good deal of time on this application. I believe that they deserve a response on matters like this.

What views did you meant ? In tracklist based views you can sort by any column(s) and in other views by properties which makes sense to sort by.

Whilst I think the sort function is more advanced than is immediately apparent, it is not unusual these days to have multi-tier sorting, such as the ability to sort by artist first and then by track name, or any other combination. In practical terms, the purpose of this might be to easily identify tags that might require amendment, a never ending task for those seeking media perfection .

Based upon previous posts, I assume that he is meaning grid views.

You have provided less grid sorting options than were available in MM4. It also offered Genre, Length, Composer and Rating, which MM5 loses.
And you also offered Grouping in the grid. ... it was mandatory, but it would be best if it was optional IMO ... ie. I prefer it the way that it is.

There are other columns which also make sense; some people have asked for Original date, and I know that Conductor is important to David.
Or people may want to sequence the grid by one of the Custom field values.

ie. "properties which makes sense to sort by" is a subjective thing.

They do allow multi-tier sorting.
Click the major sort column, and then Ctrl+click the minor sort column(s) ... the implementation is really neat ... the sort columns get little sub-text number to show the sort hierarchy, and the is also a hover mouse tool tip too, just in case one of the sort columns is non-displayed, or is currently scrolled out of view.

I see what you meant. In MM4 we have rating and length (i do not see genre and conductor as they're rather track properties ... maybe somehow usable in classical ?).

Barry is correct, my concern is the Grid View, in a nutshell, there is no sort by function. To make matters worse MM have chosen to only sort Grid selections by Year which is not a mandatory field & hence not always tagged. Sorting by Album or Artist would make more sense.

In the Year sub node I'm not sure how the Grid selection is sorted? I can see on the far right of the screen a 'sort by popularity' whatever that means. I notice also that when you make a selection in the Grid view it opens in a 'Browser' view, Not sure why.
I see what you meant. In MM4 we have rating and length (i do not see genre and conductor as they're rather track properties ... maybe somehow usable in classical ?).
Sorry, i don't know what this means??

Ahhh ... i see, you meant sorting in popups (when you 'open' albums popup for any artist for example) and limited sorting in year decade detail.

Tracked as 16311.

Thanks. I hadn't realised the potential of adding 'ctrl' before clicking the column header. A hidden gem. With the filter function I have everything I could possibly need in terms of sorting. I did also stumble across the collapse/show all button to the left of the filter button which has given me back my favourite view, previously known as show art with details. Very happy with this aspect.
