WHY do you force me to buy Excel???

Post by Guest »

 I know, it may be very, very unusual that _anybody_ has more than one Computer.
I for one am the very very special exception, because I do not only have a Computer in the Office, but also at home. Believe it! :o
Ok, here's what I try to tell: Why does MM deny the export as *.xls when Excel is not installed on _this_ Computer?
I am sure, I am the only human being on this world who has acces to more than one Computer which are _not_ completely identical... :-?
Does _any_ of the developers thought about exporting an *.xls and - _wow_ :o what a great idea - use this on a different computer. Maybe BillGates doesn't tell you explicitely, but it is - under certain circumstances- possible to exchange information with other computers, even if one of these computers does _not_ have the source application installed on it.

Sorry for beeing that sarcastic, but was _so_ disappointed being stucked after purchasing a license an still being not able to export into Excel. I will NOT buy a second license for Excel to install it on the Computer where MM is running on, no thank you.

[/b]  :( :x   :P :-? 8) :)

I didn't know that the export script Required Excel. That is a bummer.

However, what are you looking for that cannot be done with a CSV? Excel opens them up natively anyway.

We don't require Excel installed just for fun or because we want you to buy more Excel licenses, that really isn't the point.

XLS file format is an undocumented binary format (correct me if this has been changed in recent months) and thus it really isn't easy for an application to support export to Excel without it being installed. Don't blame us for this, this is the way Microsoft designed it. When Excel is installed, it's fairly simple to export to it as you can see in Export.vbs script file.

I would suggest using CSV format, there isn't any problem reading it in any Excel version. In Office XP Excel supports XML format natively, so that could be possible future solution, but I haven't studied it yet.

For those interested - there is a documentation of XLS format made by OpenOffice at http://sc.openoffice.org/excelfileformat.pdf. However, still there are no plans to implement this in MM.

Two computers + Excel ? = I understand you want to have same info in both computers.

To synchronize MediaMonkey info between you two computers, just copy the mediamonkey.mdb from one station to another.

No software required.

One unpleasant side-effect of copying the mdb from one station to another is the out-of-sync state of the Virtual CD on the target computer, but I've been told that this will be addressed in future releases.
