Wifi sync to android samsung s2

Post by nalawod »

Not sure if these are bugs, but I've encountered several odd things:
1) I only chose a few Genre's to sync- like Fold, Indie, and Classical. It never syncs classical unless I separately choose the Classical collection item as it seems to treat it different than the Music collection. I understand the reasoning for the different collections so you can have a different view- but when I'm in Music collection on MMW, if I choose Genre "Classical", I do see all my classical music (same count of tracks as in collection "Classical"). But on MMA, the Genre classical doesn't even show up at all. I have to choose "Classical" on the home screen to see my classical music. Is this a bug or am I just doing this wrong? Ideally, I'd like to get rid of "Classical" as a separate collection and just have it be part of my regular music collection on MMA.

2) Seems to be some bugs in choosing Genre's to sync. As above, I started adding Genre's a few at a time starting with the ones with the smallest count. I got the first few in there with about 50 tracks total synced to my Samsung. Then I chose one more with a small count and suddenly it sync'd the whole librarary of 1582 tracks. I looked back at MMW's device sync screen and it still showed only the Genre's I had selected on my Samsung. In the end, I wanted all these anyway - I was just trying to being with small sync sizes so I could easily verify (quickly) that the wifi sync was working. SO when this happend, I went ahead and chose all my Genre's, hit Sync and just as I thought, it said I was current (none downloaded). A bug?

3) I dismounted my SD card on my Samsung so I could view it from my computer - when I remounted it, and went into MMA, after the "hourglass" stopped (I'm sure that's the android media scan), I hit Sync on the wifi external sd card sync -- and it's now spent about 1 hour "Matching New Files" - seems to be comparing every single track on my SD media folder with the MMW library. It shouldn't need to do this every time I dismount/remount and SD or reboot my phone should it?

BTW, this may be 3 big topic/questions - but I LOVE MMA and MMW. In fact as soon as you guys threw out the special pricing for beta testers, I bought the MMA pro immediately. Thanks for making the best player out there!

1) MMA will treat Music and Classical separately, you can't change that.

2) You may have had something else selected that caused the files to be synced. For me it always has only synced what I selected (although I sync Playlists).

3) This is likely needed as MMA (and Android) had to re-read all the media files again and don't know how they ended up on the card.

1) what's the reasoning for separating classical the way MMA / MMW does. I can certainly understand having the ability to create custom collections to have a different view (as in for Classical, the Classical enthusiasts would want Composer), but to force syncs without classical even though I've chosen classical genre is a bit misleading - almost as if it's two separate library's (which it's not).

2) I definitely did not accidentally choose extra Genre's - as each time I chose one to sync, I saw the same one "ticked" on the server side. When all the extra genre's sync'd, not only did I not see them selected on the MMA side, I did not see these selected on the server either. Not a big deal - but I'm pretty sure there's a bug randomly cropping up. I'm fine with it though- not the end of the earth ;-)

3) Makes sense that is the reason - kind of what I expected the answer to be. If I"m just using MMA or Google Music Player, after a card mount it takes about 5 minutes for the media scanner to pick up all the tracks again. Makes sense that sync would not only need for that to happen but it has to compare every track. But it took exceedingly long - about 4 hours. Much longer than just wiping the music and staring the sync from scratch. A sync when empty only takes about 30 minutes. Since I reboot my phone about once or twice per week, I'll probably just not use wifi sync unless an alternative method to compare can be found. Like a crc check or just total sync'd to total in place. I know they probably would prefer tighter integration than that though.

1) Many users do see Classical Music and Music as 2 separate things. Whereas Music is Artist - Album oriented this isn't the case for Classical Music where it is often Composer oriented. Anyway you likely are still able to get Classical Music into Music in MMA if you set Type to Music for Classical Music in MediaMonkey (in Properties dialog).

2) You could have selected anything else, including Albums, Artist, other Collections or Playlists. If you can reproduce you should create a debug log (step 4b) and send it to support: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... f=12&t=341

3) Why not connect the phone to the PC and access the SD card that way?

1) yup- I understand that Classical enthusiasts would want to see their own view of classical collections. My only point is that when using MMW, I see my classical tracks in the regular Music collection under Genera "Classical". If I see them there, when I sync Classical, one would naturally think it would sync the same tracks but it doesn't. Not an issue for me, but I'm just trying to point out the discrepancy.
AND, Hooray! I never realized I could edit the properties of all those tracks and throw them into the standard Music collection. That works and I appreciate your "Pro" tip!

2) I'll try reproducing again and report as you linked. Thanks.

3) Yes, I've already given up on using wifi sync due to the delay after a card re-mount. And I also found that a small percentage of my tracks were corrupt - out of about 1500 tracks, I've been playing randomly for 3 days now and found 10 bad ones. I used to have this happen when direct connecting over USB to my computer and I solved it by taking the card out of my phone and using a card reader directly in my computer (Plus that's about 50x faster to copy!).

Thanks for all your feedback and help Lowlander! This is why MediaMonkey is far superior to everything else out there - both the users and the devs have a great feedback loop going.

1) This was changed in MMW as many users weren't able to find the tracks. Collections, as they're customizable (Gold Feature), can be set to include/exclude anything. MMA isn't, at least at the moment, as customizable and thus the separation was chosen. A workaround is available (Type change).

3) I've not had file corruption issues on wifi sync (or USB sync). If it is only MediaMonkey and you can reproduce a debug log (from both MMA and MMW in case of wifi sync) could help resolve this.
