Re-synching a modified playlist?

Post by wtanksleyjr »

I have a program that builds a big MMW playlist of my podcasts, and then deletes the ones I've listened to and inserts new ones mostly at the front. (It keeps the one I'm currently listening to at the very front.)

So what happened is that I synched this with MMA, played it for a while, and then did that playlist rebuild. What I _wanted_ to happen was that I'd do the resynch, then press some button to reload the playlist, and then just be able to keep playing and hear all the new podcasts loaded into their new place.

But it didn't work that way; in fact, I couldn't find any way at all to load the new playlist. MMA just held on to the old playlist, except for removing the songs from it that had been deleted on the synch.

Is there something I have to do to get MMA to notice that a playlist has been modified? When it does this, will it keep my position in the podcast-episode I'm listening to?

Hi,

If you resynch using Wi-Fi sync, MMA should download the new tracks, get rid of the ones that are no longer on the playlist, and update the playlist (assuming it's on the auto-sync list).

Is that what you did?

Sadly, I haven't been able to make WiFi sync work yet -- not sure why, but my computer doesn't show up on the list. For now I'm using USB.

As I mentioned, it looks like it's successfully synching everything, and indeed the new songs are on the 'droid; but the playlist is the same (except that it omits the now-deleted songs).

Did you do a manual (Send To or Drag & Drop) sync or use Auto-Sync? Also what build of MMA and MMW?

Autosync.

Um... Hm, I've upgraded since then and uninstalled MMA, dropped my phone, and gotten a replacement. Yikes, I'd have to rebuild a lot to get back. I'm sorry, I don't have enough info -- I should have put all that in my original post. DUH, me.

OK. Anyhow, perhaps you've answered my question -- MMA is expected to behave the way I expected it to behave, and the playlist I was listening to should have updated without me having to do anything. If that's right, I'll keep fiddling once I get everything set up, because that's a nice way to behave.

If you do a wifi or USB Auto-Sync sync and the Playlist is selected to be synced it should be updated on each sync. This is the way it works for me.

I have what appears to be a similar problem where my Android is not immediately picking up the changes to a playlist. I suspect it is cache management on the device because it takes time to clear up; however, the device will eventually get caught up with the playlist changes.

[Edit: In light of the solution, I discover I'm wrong about eliminating MMW as part of the solution. See below.] A suggestion to others having playlist problems: Use a file management program like Astro on your Android to examine the playlist as a text file to see (1) that the playlist is on the device and (2) the changes you expect to see are indeed on in the file. This examination will eliminate questions of whether MMW is synching properly so you can focus on the synch process or the rereading of a synched playlist.

For me, synching works perfectly to my Android. The files and playlists get transferred properly. The playlists do not get read right away. When I turn on the screen with MMA running, I see the circle appear at the top of the screen momentarily as if it was reading while the screen was off. When this happened to me previously, the Android eventually got caught up with what was in the device's Playlist folder playlist files' contents. When the number of tracks shows the pre-synch count, I know it's still needing to reread.

My main question is: how can I force or expedite the rereading of the playlist?
A secondary question is: what the ... ? (A little more elegant question would be what's causing the delay in the rereading?)

Here are the particulars of my environment:
PC - Windows 7 running MMW 4.0.7.1511
Android v4.4 - Kit Kat on Verizon Moto X
MMA - Version 1.0.4.0222

BTW, I love the product on Android and look forward to it's future growth.

Hi JLegum,

Thanks for the input.

Re. the delayed update of modified playlists in MMA, your signature shows that you're running MMW 4.0.7--is that right? If you switch to MMW 4.1 (downloadable from the beta forum), you'll find that playlists update as soon as they're synced.

Rusty, you advice was perfect. Using the new version of MMW allowed MMA to detect a change in the Playlists. When opening MMA after a synch, I could see the circle spinning at the top of the screen for a minute or three. I assume it was reading my sometimes long (~700 tracks) playlists.

Problem solved and thank you for your time.
