Observations and related questions

Post by d9amic »

Hi All,

Have been trying out the DLNA features of MM for a couple of days now on my home network. My set up is as follows:

WD My Cloud NAS (on which my media files are stored);
WD TV media player, connected (HDMI) to AV receiver and through receiver to TV;
MM 4.1.5.1719 Gold run on Windows8.1 computers (in portable mode from NAS);
Network connection to WD TV and one of the computers used to run MM (a laptop in living room) is wireless.

With the WD TV I can pull music from Twonky server (pre-loaded on the NAS) or MM server. I can also push music to the WD TV from MM running on the laptop. My assumption is the latter will be the preferred method due to the better control interface of MM (vs. the WD TV on-screen menus) and most importantly, its ability (which the WD TV player lacks) to apply replay gain tags for volume leveling. Not sure it's working as I expected, however. After several hours of testing (and reading through posts in this forum), I'm left with the following observations/questions:

1. Volume leveling does not seem to be working. All tracks in the MM library are analyzed for track and album gain. Volume leveling is set to "per album" in options and "level playback volume" is enabled. It doesn't seem to make a difference - annoyingly loud tracks in the library are still too loud. My understanding was MM is capable of volume leveling over DLNA - is this incorrect?

2. Metadata - some is displayed on my TV: Title, Album, & Album Artist (but not Track Artist or any Artwork). Is it possible to choose which metadata gets displayed, or at least to get artwork to display?

3. Playback gaps - there's about a 2 sec. gap between tracks played on shuffle. Can MM push gapless over DLNA, or is this a function of the DLNA player?

4. Playback/push lag? - there's a slight but noticeable cut-off at the start of some tracks (ie. a tiny part of the first music note is cut off, so the track seems to start too abruptly). It may be due to delays in my network, but has anyone else experienced this?

I understand there's a number of possibly unrelated questions here that maybe should be discussed in separate threads - just wanted to get them out there. Thanks for reading!

1 Yes, this is set in the Media Server's settings in MM.

2 No

3 No, this is up to the client.

4 Generally plaback is up to the client. If a playback issue is reproducible among different clients then it could be a bug in MM possibly with auto-conversion.
