MMA: Scan vs. Sync

Greetings all!

Okay, stupid question: What's the difference between scan and sync? When I plug in my Pixel XL I see options for both scanning and syncing upon connection of my device but I'm not sure I understand the difference between the two.

MediaMonkey scans the device to know what's on it. After that is complete it can sync which will copy files to the device.
