Equalizer Doesn't Affect Audio Until New Track [#16461]

I recently got a new audio device, and this device doesn't allow Windows to control the EQ, so I had to delve into the Equalizer in MM5 for the first time. I noticed, every time I change a slider, something happens in the main window in the background, implying that settings are being updated in real time, but I have found that I need to exit the EQ window and restart the song or start another one in order for the changes I made to take effect. Is this intended behavior, and if so, why?
