[REQ] Using ID3v2.4 TIPL Frame for Involved People [#21433]

Hello everyone,

I have been using the ID3v2.4 tags for my .mp3 files for some time now, which MMW has supported wonderfully since version 5.

However, I haven't used the "Involved People" field much so far. After I recently started using the MP3 tagger Musicbrainz Picard for my .mp3 files, which also fills the "Involved People" tag, I realised that this information is not displayed in MMW.

After a bit of searching, I came across the page About Media File Properties in the Mediamonkey 2024 Help. It describes that MMW only uses the old and maybe obsolete ID3v2.3 frame IPLS for the Involved People and not the current ID3v2.4 TIPL frame.

Perhaps it would be possible to integrate the TIPL frame into MMW and make it configurable via the .ini file, similar to what is already done with the TDRC, TYER and TDAT frames for the year and the TDOR and TORY frames for the original year.

I have also found some old threads on this topic here in the forum, but apparently this has not been pursued any further.

Perhaps this could be considered for a future version. Especially as MMW only supports the writing of ID3v1 and ID3v2.4 tags but no ID3v2.3 tags.

Are you sure that you re scanned tracks in MM to get updated fields. Also check MM extended tags in File properties to see if and where things are saved in MP3s.

I have. The Involved People are only imported and displayed in the corresponding field if the .mp3 file contains ID3v2.3 tags. If the .mp3 file was tagged in ID3v2.4 format, the information is not displayed at all, also not in the extended tags. This is probably because the ID3v2.4 standard frame for the Involed People (TIPL) is not supported by MMW although the ID3v2.4 tag format has been set in the options.

If I got this correctly then this do not work for you?
1. Set MM to ID3v2.3
2. Fill involved field and save tags
3. make a copy of file
4. Switch MM to ID3v2.4
5. Use folder browser to load file and Update/Sync tag (CTRL+S) of file copy to ID3v2.4
6. MM do not import/see Involved field of file copy on MM restart?

For ME it works.

I'm not surprised that it works like this.

You are using MMW to tag the file and to convert the format from ID3v2.3 to ID3v2.4. MMW writes the Involved entry into the ID3v2.3 IPLS frame and also reads it from it, even if it is set to ID3v2.4. You can also see this if you look at the header of the .mp3 file in a hex editor. This does not comply with the ID3v2.4 standard (see point 4.2.2 in this document).

If you use an external tagger (e.g. MP3Tag or MusicBrainz Picard) which adheres to the ID3v2.4 standard, MMW unfortunately does not recognise the Involved People field when the .mp3 files are added.

You can try it out for yourself:

1. Set the external Tagger (e.g. MP3Tag or MusicBrainz Picard) to ID3v2.4 only.
2. Fill invoved field with the external tagger
3. Set MM to ID3v2.4 only.
4. Import file in MMW
5. The Involved People field is not recognised by MMW.

Thanks. Maybe now the Copy and Swap Fields addon will be able to exchange information with the Involved People field, omitted before now.

I just wanted to let you know that filling the Involved People field from the TIPL framestill does not work on Add/Rescan of MP3 files in MMW build 3106.

Hi,
MM still for compatibility reasons support old way, but if track only contain TIPL and id3v2.4 it will be used correctly, also when you update tags (right click -> edit tags -> Update tags [CTRL+S]) with id3v2.4 then only TIPL will be used.

Unfortunately I cannot confirm this.

All my MP3 files only contain the TIPL frame for the Involved People. Nevertheless, when adding them, the Involved People are not displayed in the corresponding field in MMW.
