Error messages "cannot create file"

Post by hoges in wa »

Hi. I have just re-installed MM on my Toshiba Notebook running XP. It's the free version and it's been on there for a few years. I tried to run an upgrade (recommended) and because it had two MM dot exe files I decided to clear it out and restart as I was getting the two messages below.

I uninstalled and reinstalled and still get:-

Error during player installation

and a second message

Cannot create file "C;\documents and settings\user\application data\media monkey\mediamonkey.ini

I have Gold on my main PC, where I organise everything and I have no issues with that and never have had (runs Windows 7)

After I clear the errors, MM starts OK on the Notebook. I just want to deal with the errors so they go away.

Also, and this is a minor issue, how do you change the labels that appear under "Music" on the left? eg Location, Artist and Album etc. I want to put Titles there but I can't find how to do it. (same as my main pc organisation)

File > Manage Collections to enable the Titles node (Gold Feature) for the Collection you need it.

It sounds like a permissions issue. You may want to try to run as Administrator.

Thanks. I'm already the Administrator on the Notebook. Makes no difference. Still get the error message/s.
(ps: like the beer site. I'm part-way through a beer tour of the world myself.)

No, didn't have a user name or a p/word sign in. The folder seems to be "All Users" but I'm not sure if that's the one I should be looking at.

MM ran without this problem for some years on this Notebook and the issue only started two days ago when I did the Update that was recommended to 4.06 I think.

I don't even know if it's a real problem because MM starts OK after I clear the error messages. I only get one error on the way out, though - the "cannot create" message, I don't get the initialising one.

If any of that makes sense to you?

Apologies for the slow response time - I was volume levelling the Notebook library and it took about 18 hours.

it does not appear to be saving settings. If I exit with the left tree node in (say) Playlist and only the data screen, when I return there are three segments of the screen showing and we are back at the top of the node tree. I tried it with several different exit states and it always restarts with the default i.e. the screen is split into three.

Then you do have an issue. You may want to send a debug log (step 4b) to support as it may uncover more: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=69

Sorry to appear clueless on this but what is step 4b? and where do I send it to? I've searched Help for it and only turn up lots of other references to Step 4b but I can't see how to locate it or what to do with it (which, presumably, I will discover when I find 4b)

Every windows OS has a username. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, it should say what user you are logged in as.

I just created one when I started this exchange. Before that is was just "user".

Now I have a name for administrator and a password. Makes no difference, same error message/s.

You may want to try reinstalling MediaMonkey as the new user.

Uninstalled (with usual great difficulty as it won't Remove the program from the control panel and then it won't let you delete the files without a restart first)

Logged in as new administrator. D/l MM. Same result - usual error messages.

Frustrating.
