I have a Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 and this problem was annoying enough for me that I googled up a workaround:

Create a file called ctrlshftaltn.vbs and put this text in it:

Set WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WSHShell.SendKeys "^+%n"

and another one ctrlshftaltp.vbs with

Set WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WSHShell.SendKeys "^+%p"

Put them both in C:\Program Files\MediaMonkey or wherever.

Now go the Intellitype/Key Settings page on the keyboard control panel.
Edit the Back key to "Start a program, Web page, or file" and browse to ctrlshftaltp.vbs. Set the next key to run ctrlshftaltn.vbs.

Now go to Monkey's options and set Multimedia: Next to be Ctrl-Shift-Alt-N and Multimedia: Previous to be Ctrl-Shift-Alt-P and make sure they both have Global clicked on.

Badabing!

This would even better if mediamonkey accepted command line args to go to previous/next.

thanks agraham! this works great. i wonder if this will all have been fixed in 3.0.3, soon out. I doubt it - it's probably more of a problem in microsoft's stuff than it is in MM's...

I have a Microsoft Digital Media Pro Keyboard that I'm trying to get working. The multimedia keys (play/pause, next, previous, stop) on the keyboard are ignored in MediaMonkey.

I've have the latest Intellitype Pro drivers 6.20.148.0 for my keyboard
I'm using MediaMonkey 3.0.2.1134
The keys work fine in Windows Media Player 11
The keys work properly when I map them to other things (like 'my computer' or other folders)

I've tried MMkeys without success
I've tried various settings in MediaMonkey's Options/Hotkeys menu

I was able to get agraham's solution to work, however it only works when the MediaMonkey window is on top. The hotkey entries in MediaMonkey all have 'Global' checked.

Is there a way to make this work when MediaMonkey is minimized? Is there another workaround or fix that I'm not seeing?

I guess it must depend on the keyboard then. I just started using a Comfort Curve 2000, latest Intellitype, etc. Followed the OPs instructions and they work great.
Except whenever I press any of the keys (including play/pause), Mediamonkey starts flashing in the taskbar which is annoying.

agraham's solution works fine for me, even when MM is in the background. it worked in 3.0.2, and still works in 3.0.3.1183. perhaps you have a conflict with some other hotkey process running on your comp?

Under Windows XP : MediaMonkey v3.2.0.1294 with "Microsoft MS Comfort Curve keyboard v1.0" (= Microsoft Comfort Curve keyboard 2000).

Because I did not want to install the software "Microsoft Intellitype", I made this workaround :

English :
Menu Tools / Options / General, Keyboard shortcuts / zone "Edit shortcut" / Drop list "Select an action" / "Read next track" / Click the area "Shortcut" / Press the keyboard key "Next" / <Apply> / <Ok>.
Do the same operations for "Read next track" .

One comment - for me in MM 3 and W7, I didn't see Multimedia: Next or Multimedia: Previous in the MM options, so I used Playback: Next and Playback: Previous instead. It worked! (I actually don't see anything listed as "Multimedia")

Thanks so much agraham!

If you do not See it you can add it as new shortcut and repeat steps described above.

Had the same issue with the MS Natural Keyboard 4000 and fixed it in the following way:

In MediaMonkey enable the following hotkeys:

Playback: Next Track - Ctrl+N
Playback: Play/Paus - Ctrl+P
Playback: Previous Track - Ctrl+B

In MS keyboard settings create macros for the above key combinations and assign them to the keys you want. Save and enjoy.

On a related note i tried to assign rating hotkeys to a few keys to be able to rank songs with a dedicated key. I tried the following:

Rating now playing track: Rate 0.5 Star Down - Ctrl+Alt+7
Rating now playing track: Rate 0.5 Star Up - Ctrl+Alt+6
Rating selected track(s): Rate 0.5 Star Down - Alt+7
Rating selected track(s): Rate 0.5 Star Up - Alt+6

I tried different keyboard timings, different keys, etc., but it just wouldn't work.
It's not critical but would be nice. Can't think of a logical reason why this particular combination would not work.
