ok - I can see you've combined the posts here..
Yes I did see another post similar to this one, but thats why I split the issue into 2 parts..
The first is that yes maybe the codec pack is needed - but the error that you get certainly doesn't make that clear. I mean - yes - its clear its telling you something is missing, but then we also see other posts that say M4A files are supported if you have Quicktime installed... so - the codec itself is supported right, but just not over streaming? I think that could be clearer in the error.
The second part, is about getting an error popping up on the Desktop PC, which in my case is headless, when I've initiated the playback from the laptop. Theres no error back on the laptop, no mention of any issue at all... and yet the desktop MM4 instance is completely stopped until you login and click 'Ok'. Does DLNA have a mechanism to report the error back to the laptop that initiated the playback ?

I doubt that controllers can deal with errors on clients.
