First my versions - mma 175, MMW 4.1.0.1661 (this is probably old)

Ok here's what I did to test.

First a clean slate. Took all music and playlists off of phone. Set up to auto sync only 1 playlist with around 100 songs.

Connected phone via USB and did sync. It synced fine, playlists were there, all songs worked etc. I did not use any other music players. Eject/Disconnected USB

Rebooted phone, and back in MMA, there were now 2 of the same playlist, both empty. Trying the Artist/Album tab was also empty. Trying thru thr "folders" tab let me see the folder structure but they were all empty (no valid tracks).

On the SD card (I'm using external) the files are all still there.

So I connected to the computer again and did a new sync. It copied all the files again even though they were already on the device, but it did not actually make duplicates - it seems to have replaced them all. MMA found all songs and playlist, but this time there were 2 copies of my playlist; one was empty, the other had all my tracks. Reboot again and this time only 1 playlist, empty.

Regardless of the other wacky behavior rebooting seems to do render my playlists empty (at least to MMA - see below) every time. So this is repeatable.

I don't normally make playlists on my device but sync'd one more time to test this. Made a playlist of 5 or 6 tracks from my artsts/albums tab. Worked fine. Rebooted and both the original playlist (from MMW) and the one I made on MMA are empty!!!

At THIS point I started up PowerAmp, and it, interestingly, can see BOTH playlists - the MMW and the MMA-made ones - and they both work fine, and are NOT empty.

This makes me think it is something with the MM DB and not the playlists themselves, but again, I don't really know.

Something I thought of while I was doing this that may be related (or not)... I keep my music on the external SD card. When I first boot my phone, it takes a little while for the card to be ready - it 'checks' it and my podcast app takes a few seconds to 'load feeds' etc. I do have a home screen widget for MMA that seems ready with the previous track I was playing, even right after I boot up. I wonder if this is trying to access the ExtSD card but getting nothing because it is still being mounted by the system? Maybe the same thing happens if we reboot and open up MMA right away before the SD card is ready to be accessed? I think I debunked this when I rebooted that last time, waited, and the PL was still empty.

Home some of this helps, and thanks very much for all the help and looking into it. I do love MM!

Hi Scottie,

Thanks for all the detailed feedback. I doubt that the outdated MMW is affecting this, but it's possible since there have been a few playlist/sync related fixes since 1661 (we expect to post a new MMW/MMA build later today if all goes well), so it would be useful if you could do a quick test with the latest builds.

Also, can you confirm what your MMW sync settings are?
In the Auto sync tabs:
[ ] Delete other files and playlists from the device
[ ] Auto-sync new files and playlists from the device to the PC
[ ] Auto-sync file metadata from the device to the PC
In the Options > Playlists tab:
[ ] Sync Playlists
Generate device playlists for:
[ ] Artists
[ ] Albums
[ ] Location
Destination directory: ________________

Thanks.

-Rusty

EDIT: I should also mention that I tested this out again with several different sync configurations on a GS3/JB 4.1.1 and still can't replicate :-(

FWIW I'm on 4.1.2. I did have this working fine once upon a time so maybe it's related.

Will update MMW and test again asap, and include those details you asked for. Would the fact that the playlists were created in a much older version (not sure but it was months ago) matter at all? I'll make a new one just to test that.

Having created playlists in an earlier version of MMW shouldn't matter. What could matter though, is that if your initial sync with MMW 4.1 was over Wi-Fi (rather than via USB), MMW might have created a new sync profile, in which case you'd have one sync profile for USB syncs and another for WiFi syncs, which would cause all sorts of problems.

Let us know what you find. Thanks!

Hello Rusty,

So right now im on MMA 1.0.4.0178 MMW 1668

and i notice the following :

- all my playlists are in the list on my device, but 3 of them show "empty"

This is right after sync
If i sync again, they stay "empty"

On MMW, these 3 playlists have respectively 281, 194 and 101 files

So this is a new bug as it has never happenned to me before

Please let me know if you need some sort of log of information, otherwise i'll just delete everything and install everything from scratch

PS : i have all the box unticked except "sync to this location" in the Sync settings for this location

Hello. I finally had a chance to test again.

First I updated both MMW (1668) and MMA (178)

Then I cleared the music from my device (manually by deleting the music folders) and then in MMW set it to sync only 1 playlist. When I hit sync, it asked if I wanted to delete the old files, which were only playlists - but it was still showing them as on the device, and showing 2 locations for each one. (so you know, I have my music on the external card. All of the music is in Artist/Album folders inside the folder "Music" which is at the main directory. Also in the main directory is a folder called _Playlists where I tell it to store the playlists. When it asked to delete them, it showed one set at _Playlists/Playlist.m3u, and another set shown as /storage/ExtSdCard/_Playlists. Techinically those are both the same directory, so it is interesting to see them listed twice. Sometimes, I would also get duplicate lists in MMA, one one would always be empty.

Anyway I synced my one playlists and chose to delete anything it asked me from the device. In MMA, that 1 playlists was there, but so were all of the old ones (with dupes) but they were all empty. On reboot, that list was still full, but the others are all still there, empty.

EDIT to add - that playlists I made last time on the device itself has stuck around - even though I have asked it to be deleted on every sync since, it persists. Where would this be stored - a playlists created on MMA?

Is there a way to completely reset the phone settings/profile in MMW so it is like I'm connecting a brand new phone (without losing all my playlists etc of course)? I'm thinking it may help at this point.

My settings:
In the Auto sync tabs:
[x] Delete other files and playlists from the device
[ ] Auto-sync new files and playlists from the device to the PC
[x] Auto-sync file metadata from the device to the PC
In the Options > Playlists tab:
[x] Sync Playlists
Generate device playlists for:
[ ] Artists
[ ] Albums
[ ] Location
Destination directory: \_Playlists\

I'm now going to sync a few more playlists and see what happens.

Aralvor, ScottieB,

Thanks for the detailed info--we're investingating... To rule out other issues, can you both please confirm that:

1) No playlists are unchecked in Tools > Options > Media Sharing > MediaMonkey Library > Shared Content (or in custom sharing profiles that might have been created for the device in question; these are accessible by clicking on the device in Tools > Options > Media Sharing > MediaMonkey Library > UPnP/DLNA tab > Select UPnP client device > CLICK Options ). Prior to build 1669, any playlists disabled in this manner will fail to sync).

2) In MMW, a single profile exists for your device. It's possible that one profile is being used for USB Sync, and another for Wi-Fi sync (this can occur if the initial sync on upgrading from 4.0.7 is via Wi-Fi), which would result in failed syncs depending on whether the auto-sync list was edited in MMA or MMW.

Thanks.

1/ everything is checked, in UPNP or regular sharing content

2/ edit : can you explain exactly where the profile is and how i can check that?

Yes, that is where the Device Profiles are.

so 2/ i deleted all profiles, it created a new one when i tried to sync

there is actually 2

- Samsung GT-i9300 - Internal Storage (d_WMDM...)
- Windows Media compatible device (d_WMDM...)

They both appeared upon syncing

For both of them, when i configure, in "Auto-Sync (--> Device)" tab, nothing is checked (but i think thats normal)

I will check those when I can but for now just wanted to update - after my tests above, I synced more playlists. Right after sync, the old lists (that had been there before my single-playlist test) showed up as duplicates, with 1 version empty. 2 other playlists I hadn't synced previously were not duplicated. On reboot of the phone, ALL playlists were duped and both copies show as empty.

Aralvor,

Based on your screencap, it appears that multiple profiles existed for the phone. Please disabled (using the checkbox) any profiles that you don't need, just to make sure that a single Galaxy S3 profile is being used. e.g. disable the one for the internal memory.

To answer those questions - I have no playlists at all in the " UPnP/DLNA tab > Select UPnP client device " section. I've never used wifi sync either.

I have a bunch of devices, mostly usb memory sticks, but only 1 each for my phone and the phone's card. I tried disabling/unchecking every other entry but still same behavior.
