[REQ] Enable converting to .OPUS [#21587]

Post by manalive »

Please allow users to convert to Opus audio format.
I have a good amount of FLAC audio that I want to keep in my library as FLAC, but when syncing via MediaMonkey Android, I want to convert it to OPUS.

Hi,
MM do not have OPUS Encoder I added it as https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=21587 Decoder plugin is available here https://www.happymonkeying.com/plugin.php?q=300117

Out of curiosity why OPUS as listening format?

Thanks Peke!

At this point, OPUS is almost universally considered the best lossy audio codec available. (Aside from some very obscure, new, or experimental options).

- Open source, open standard, royalty-free, BSD-like license
- Higher (or matching) fidelity and higher bitrate efficiency than AAC/Vorbis.
- Achieves transparency at lower bitrates than other codecs

https://opus-codec.org/comparison/

It's already supported by Musicbee, VLC, foobar, AIMP, amarok among many other players and all WebRTC browsers.

I want to keep my audio lossless on my server, but when I transfer to mobile devices, I want something I can trust to be fairly high fidelity with smaller files, and OPUS is the natural choice.

Yeah, I use OPUS a lot too for portable listening. I convert my FLAC albums to OPUS mostly when I’m uploading to my phone or streaming from my home server, the file size difference is massive and I don’t lose noticeable audio quality, even using decent headphones. I used to go with AAC for everything but once I read more about OPUS and tested it side by side, it just made more sense.

Same here, I rip my CDs to FLAC for archiving but always convert to OPUS when I move them to my phone or tablet. The space savings are huge, and honestly I can’t tell a difference in quality for everyday listening. I tested it with a few long car rides and even on my studio monitors, and OPUS still holds up way better than I expected.
For stuff like converting APE or FLAC to smaller formats, I usually run it through a converter I found that handles lossless files really well.
