Why does tapping the shuffle button once empty the playlist?
Why does tapping the shuffle button once empty playlist? How do I get it back if it was created on the app and not synced to another device?

Which version of MMA and please describe which Shuffle button you're referring to? Enabling/Disabling Shuffle doesn't clear the Now Playing or Playlist here.

I suspect that you might be clicking the 'Play all shuffled' button (it appears at the top right in the Track Browser) rather than the shuffle toggle. It plays all tracks in the current view in random order.
If you just want to enable 'Shuffle' mode, tap on the Now Playing artwork, and then tap on the Shuffle icon that appears.

I think it depends on the version of MMA. But I would also agree with Rusty.
