I encounter few Coding Apps, but most apps that uses min SP3 are games, I think that compatibility pack for office 2003 to load office 2007 documents needs SP3 but I'm not sure.

For a workaround? I'd say no. For a fix? I'd say yes.

I am surprised to hear that. I do not recall seeing a single app that has SP3 as minimum requirement, and of the 30 or so apps I use none TMK are particularly advantaged by SP3.

Isn't that why we are here?

I looked about MS statistics and less and less users use SP2 due the fact that lots of newer programs take advantage of SP3 fixes/upgrades.

OK, sorry.

If you installed SP3, then your installation is not SP2. SP2 is Microsoft Windows Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 : Service Pack 2)

> For now good is that we know workaround

Bad though for the new user who does not.

Yes, I know I just confirmed your initial observation. There must be some sort of DLL conflicts/missing Function entry points, ... SP2 version that I had never experienced problems, only thing is that I have SP1 OEM install CD and SP2 Standalone upgrade and SP3 ISO From MS which has been installed after SP3 Release.

For now good is that we know workaround and easy way to fix the problem.

Peke, my original report shows I have WMP9 installed!! That's part of Win XP SP2.

That's what I like about you guys! And what is making MM so good. :)

I no longer have my Apps2 installation (WinXP SP2 with no WMF update) which exhibited the tagging failure. I have my Apps4 installation (WinXP SP2 plus official MM WMA 11 update) which does not exhibit the tagging failure but which exhibits absense of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media" -> "Format" , and this shows

Code: Select all

File Name File Version
wmasf.dll 9.00.00.3250 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-21 58)
wmvcore2.dll 8.20.00.5058 built by: private/dmd_DEV(bld4act)

I would Really like to get bottom of this. Can you check the properties of, either wmasf.dll or wmvcore.dll inside system32 folder on affected systems?

Mine are v11.0.5721.5251

Oh dear. That's a very different version to the MM official version: http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/127/89579332.gif

Whoops! Filed by me!! :) Sorry and Thanks. (Note to beginner self: remember to cross-link from forum...)

>>> Can you give me Registry value of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media" -> "Format" property?

Must... or should?? Hard looking did not find it.

BTW, on a second fresh Windows XP SP2 installation, but plus WMA 11 update, I do see HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media but empty - so no "Format" property.

> Do you have HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Microsoft\WindowsMedia\Setup\BlockingRefCounts\App registry entry?

That first installation is gone, but on this second (with WMF11) - no.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Microsoft holds only
MediaPlayer
Multimedia
Windows
Windows NT
It sounds like it would be worth you setting up Win XP SP2 in a VM.

it is on http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=5571 BTW that Registry entry must exist as it shows current version WMP and Windows media Format libraries installed.

Do you have HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Microsoft\WindowsMedia\Setup\BlockingRefCounts\App registry entry?
