do you know if msdip allows one to keep thumbnails on a hard drive and full size images on a dvd/cd ??? (as an archive)

It's a very good, fast, advanced and free image library/organizer/converter/renamer and also has a separately launchable viewer (e.g. to view pictures very quickly when browsing your computer).
Glad you like it - I think it's really impressive as is fastStone's screen capture utility too. I cannot believe it's all freeware - no spam - no spyware - no ads - it simply works well.

:-)
I've been giving FastStone a try over the last couple of days. It's got some nice features. I generally use irfan view but will keep a copy of FastStone.

What's so special about screen capture utilities? Isn't that what your Print Screen button is for? It's not that big a deal to slice'n'dice a screen shot into smaller chunks :-?

i got rid of the paw photo manager. it was just not as good as it sounded.

i went back to the windows explorer, i just keep picking the folder i want to save in to when i save the photo from what ever program i used to edit it. of course it is easier since i used xteq set up to put a link to the folder i use for artwork in the list of the save window panel.

but that is how i once again do it. 8)

I generally use Irfanview for the little image viewing/management that I do.

It's free too.

I use Canon Software for getting pics off my digital camera. The software automatically puts the pics in folders with a date name. All pics of the same date go in the same folder.

I love this feature. I like sorting all my photos by date taken.

I hate the Canon software -- and only use it cuz it puts the photos in date folders.

Picasa - let's you name the folder. That's ok. But when downloading 100 pics from 3 different days -- that's some manual management. I want it to work automatically - but want to stop using the Canon software.

Any ideas?

try this

http://faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm (freeware)
