no drive letter in MM and dissapears when i exit itunes....

I have an iPod 512MB shuffle. when i plug it into my PC it comes up in MM for about 10 secs then dissapears again. when i go into iTunes, it's there. if i try adding music to it from itunes then it also appears in MM only to run away again once copying has finished in iTunes. How do i add personalised report fields to the reports feature? i would like the report to include the custom fields as well. at the moment it's default setting is not to include these.....
