1) In options > File Types, is WAV selected?

2) If the file is grey after being played, it would mean that MediaMonkey can't locate the file either because it was moved or because it was deleted. If it was moved, use :
File > Locate Moved/Missing tracks and then search for the tracks.

some mp3's at one time i found online had been made and typed a new format for the file.

so the mp3 read .wav but was in fact .mp3 so that could be going on with your files? :-?

way to check that is try to open the wav file with a wav editor it will tell you if it is a real wav or not.

That has no effect on whether MM can play WAV files, only on whether it is associated with them in Explorer.

Not in my experience. I have many times seen MM grey an undeleted unmoved file that it has some problem playing.

That was quick! :)

I'll add relations to the WMA issues. Perhaps they are fixed too.
