MMA draining battery

Post by toby1kenobi »

I've noticed my phone discharging faster than usual, and upon inspection it looks like Media Monkey (for Android) is seemingly draining my battery, despite not actually being used. Android's battery usage monitor has Screen first at 21% battery use, MMA second at 15%. Over the period measured I definitely have not explicitly used MMA at all.

My phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) is also running very hot, although I don't know that that is MMA-related.

Has anyone come across this, is there anything I can do? I have mainly used MMA for syncing to my phone, as I couldn't get it to work over USB.

Which build of MMA are you using and have you tried to reboot the device?

I'm using the version of MMA from the Play store...so whatever that is (is that what you mean?).

I do restart my phone daily, although I only noticed the high battery usage by MMA today - I'd noticed my phone seemed to be discharging quicker than usual, but hadn't actually got around to checking the battery monitor thing.

The current version on the Play store is build 189, and isn't known to have any power management problems. Can you:
- Confirm the build number (via 'About')
- Let me know if you've enabled the lock screen player or a widget
- Any other non-standard configs?

Thanks.

Hi there,

Yes, build 189, no, no lock screen/widget stuff. Today it hasn't started draining the battery...so maybe it's not consistent. I guess I'll post back here if it starts happening again.

I noticed this has had no updates since the last post.

MMA is actually draining the battery on my mobile as much as the screen is (almost). I haven't used MM today at all. The phone was charged fully this morning and it was taken off charge around 4am.

See this one for the battery settings screen and this one for the specifics on MMA.

My take on this situation is that when the phone is rebooted MMA loses all it's music data (albums, playlists etc. - same thing happens when you mount / unmount the SD card). It's been doing this for three versions of MMA. So if I go into MMA after the reboot, albums is blank. After a while I go into MMA and it's scanning the music locations (in my case my SD card). This is what is killing the battery I guess.

For me MMA is unusable. I can't have it killing my battery. It shouldn't be rescanning the SD card every time the phone is rebooted (or SD card unmounted / remounted).

Happy to test this but for now I've disabled MMA. Can't continue to take the battery draining hit.

Specifics you wanted:

Build Number: I'm using version 1.0.4.0204 - I upgraded to this because of the battery draining issue from 0202 - nothing has changed with either battery draining or the losing music data.
Lock screen widget - I have 'Show the default Android Lock Screen Widget' ticked.
Non-standard settings: Not sure what you mean by these but I have 1, 2, 3.

Let me know if you want anything else as I'm keen to use MMA.

Thanks for corroborating and the extra info - I'm still seeing this too (MMA is the biggest drain on my battery in fact), also latest version

toby1kenobi,

Are you also experiencing the problem of MMA losing the music library on reboot? If so, it sounds as if you're experiencing the same problem as is described at http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 21&t=73746 . And maybe the 2 are related as you suggest.

But we, despite much effort, have been unable to replicate that problem thus far :-(

Hi,
MMA can be intensive on access during sync are you sure that soem Antivirus app do not activate in the process or you have nay background player (other than MMA) that constantly scans/updates its library?

I am experiencing the problem the library being lost after reboot which is why MMA is scanning again after every reboot and killing my battery.

I can replicate the problem by rebooting my phone. Or to make it easier by unmounting and remounting my SD card. That's how easy it is for me to replicate it.

The thread you added in your post doesn't offer any solution to the problem of the library going missing. But I too am on a custom ROM so the problem may lie there. Is it perhaps something as simple as MM is started before the SD card is mounted and when MM starts, sees no music files on the SD card it marks the entries as void. By the time the card is mounted it's too late? Just a guess. I have no idea how MMA works internally.

MMA is being intensive, but I'm not syncing anything. I've got all my music on my SD card that is copied there manually. But regardless of that I think the problem is being missed. The problem is not that MMA is scanning the SD card and killing my battery. That's the symptom. The problem is MMA is losing it's library after every reboot which causes it to scan the SD card (as it should) and kill my battery.

I have no other music player in the background or elsewhere running. The problem is MMA. Nothing else.

The impression I get is nobody has a clue about this which is why we're getting letting help. I appreciate nobody is a genius here and can automatically work out what is happening from a few simple messages. MMA is unusable to me the way it works. I use, and paid for (that's a clarification that I use and love MM not an entitlement to free support for the Android version) MM so it's my player of choice. When I saw it on Android of course I wanted to use it.

I'm prepared to help you guys out with getting to the bottom of this. I appreciate it's Xmas so nothing is likely to kick off until the New Year, however do not forget about us.

Hi Guys,

Thanks--esp. pauby who gave the clue that we needed to replicate the problem. I was able to do so as follows:
1 Run MMA
-->observe tracks, albums, playlists, etc.
2 Close MMA & wait for process to terminate
3 Unmount SD Card
4 Run MMA (and initiate scan (i.e. Options > Check for new media) if it doesn't scan automomatically)
--> Library content (e.g. Albums) is empty, but playlists remain, though they are all now empty
5 Close MMA and wait for it to terminate
6 Remount the SD card
7 Run MMA (and initiate scan (i.e. Options > Check for new media) if it doesn't scan automomatically)
--> Scan takes about 15 minutes (using significant battery resources). After it's complete, the library is repopulated except that some/all of the the Playlists are now empty.

I suspect that this bug occurs in either of the following situations:
a) some devices may occasionally unmount the drive during use due to a combination of device drivers and the SD card being used ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=2113906 ) --> each time it unmounts and MMA is run/scan is triggered --> the bug occurs
b) as suggested by pauby: on some devices MM might run at startup prior to the SD card getting mounted --> the bug occurs

I don't know if this follows but I have been having battery problems recently. Here is an image of my Applications Manager of RUNNING apps. the time on MM keeps growing but it shouldn't be running.
