Support for TSOA, TSOP and TSOT tags [#2915]

Post by bgibbard »

Presumably for historical reasons most sources of files, last.fm, etc., etc. seem to be using peoples names in firstname-lastname order, but as someone with a mostly classical collection it irritates me greatly that I am expected to look for music by Beethoven under "L" for Ludwig in the composer node, so I always change most of my tags to lastname-firstname order.

I would dearly love to be able to enter tags in the order people like last.fm, etc. expect, but still have them sort in a sensible order by last name in the composer node.

I understand that ID3v2.4 does have TSOA, TSOP and TSOT tags which allow you to set sort orders for albums, performers and titles respectively. Is there any chance that MM could support these?

[I do apologize, this was meant to be posted in the Wishlist forum, and I mistakenly put it in Need Help. I would appreciate it if a moderator could move it to the correct location. Sorry about that!]

We haven't implemented this yet, because most of users probably prefer this to be as automatic as possible, without the need for new fields. Therefore currently MM for example can automatically handle 'the' prefixes.

That said, we are interested in your suggestions and it would be nice to know how other users feel about it...

I'm definitely hoping that the word "yet" implies that there is some hope that something along these lines will eventually appear.

I would like MM to support any and all tags, and give users an advanced 'view raw tags' type properties to allow us access to add/modify/remove any arbitrary tags and fields.

I don't know if there is an "industry standard" yet on this. WMP also uses the semi-colon. Maybe for compatibility sake instead of using a different character MediaMonkey should be able to customized how it show multi-value fields. ie automatically replaces ; with a configured character for those who wish to do so.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but I am wondering why it isn't possible to view the "publisher" tag in your library, since it is in the tag information (and even retrievable from the web through Media Monkey)

There is no build in library node for 'publisher' field, however it available in the track 'details' properties.

Magic nodes (script) may be able to show this field in a node view if thats what your looking for.

TSOP requires v2.4

They will not be able to support these fields until they complete their compatibility with ID3 v2.4. I am anxiously awaiting this capability, as well.

Theres is no reason to remove these automatic capabilities in order to support TSOP. TSOP could be filled automatically if the user chose... especially if TSOP did not exist. Other programs look to see if file is 2.4. If so, does TSOP exist. If not, process Artist as usual. There should be no effect on users who chose not to manage their files this way.

It would be really good if support for these tags was added to the IPOD sync. It could be an option

Use Bandsorter/Albumsortorder tags if available

and presumably very little work.

I use Mediamonkey to manage my huge library (more than 160 GB) but in order to sync with iPod I MUST use the crappy iTunes. ¿reason? iTunes support sortByYear tag, very useful if you want to see the albums from an artist ordered by year not alphabetically.

please provide this functionality (and I'll be able to abandon crappy itunes)

TSOA = Sort Order - Album Title
TSOP = Sort Order - (Track) Performer
TSOT = Sort Order - Track Title
TSO2 = Sort Order - (Album) Performer [Apple-specific]

People have been requesting the ability to edit these tags in MediaMonkey for years, to no avail. Therefore, those of us who want everything to sort correctly (on our iPods, for example) have to add the tags in a different application, often iTunes.

but...If you add that information in iTunes and after all, you use Mediamonkey to sync with iPod.....do you lose that tags info?
have you checked that issue?

I gave up on using MediaMonkey to sync to my iPod when I got an iPod Touch. I have to use iTunes to sync everything else (especially apps and making backups of my data), so there's really no reason not to use it to sync my music too.

MediaMonkey is still a great library manager, I just wish it would support all the tags I use.
