Running as service, decode breaks

Post by Roger W »

Trying 4.1 for the first time (build 1662) and looking forward to the DLNA Service feature.

However, it seems that decoder.exe often/always hangs and messes up the media sharing. Everything works fine when running the app normally.

Details: Windows 7, (no UAC), portable install, running as my user which is an admin and has Log on as a Service rights.
The DLNA client is an android device running BubbleUPnP.

There is an auto-conversion rule in place that is trying to transcode WMA Lossless to MP3. This workd when the MMW window is up, but when it's in service-only mode, I see decoder.exe processes start and sit around doing nothing until the client times out, moves to the next track, and then another decoder.exe process spawns and hangs. After that's happened, the service typically doesn't respond to other media requests.

I see this in the log repeatedly, which I'll submit in the morning after I set up an account:

Are you sure both service and MMW run as same user account? If they don't they may have different settings including Auto-Conversion rules.

Yes, thanks.

In the long run I'd like to run it as Network Service, but for now I'm troubleshooting this with the service running as my "Roger" admin account. I see it creating the temp transcoded files even, and I've run Process Monitor and don't see any unexpected Access Denied or other oddities.

This shouldn't be a problem, because he installed MM as portable, so the settings is common for all accounts (within the MM innstall folder, under /Portable/ subfolder).

Actually I tested just now myself and I see the same issue, entered as http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=11365 to be fixed in upcoming build.

i've noticed some trouble with decoder.exe on the pc. it is minor but it looks like it drags or lag's a little in doing its work.
i've been able to adjust a work around for it by use of the third party application called " Bill2s process manager" in which i used its feature to add rules for exe's and other files that do not show up in the process list, which you then have to add the rule by browsing to the process exe or dll file you want to set it up for.

but in doing that and setting it up to run in high or realtime priority i got the decoder.exe not to lag.

but i have no idea what is causing it to lag. i'm using xp pro sp3 mmw 3 so maybe the decoder.exe was not updated for mmw 4 and the use of the old mmw 3 decoder with the lag issue is being used in mmw 4? if that is so then the same cause of the lag might be causing your issue.

Thanks Ludek!

I spend so much of my work life dealing with software mega-corporations that it's an amazingly welcome relief to have such an easy path to get a fix for software that I use all day every day! Keep up the great work!

I will test in the next build and confirm on this thread.
