okay guy's WHY????

Post by rovingcowboy »

you are either not knowing, not expecting / or did it thinking it would not stay?

you know that memory leak thats been reported.
i think i found the cause and its not really a bug as far as i can tell.

only way to put it is this way.

some one mucked up the monkey.

yep that's it.

heres what is going on in mm 3 i seen this before in RC 3 version.

thought it was something i had done in the settings.
but i just seen it again.

monkey is taking all the album art it see's all the album art.
either online or in a folder on your computer.

converting it to a bigger image format. and saving it in mmcache\temp
now wheather or not you meant for it to do that and empty the cache upon closing of media monkey i don't know.

if you ment for it to keep them there forever then thats a muck up. since it converts all images to bmp format one of the larger image formats. it then causes the temp folder to fill up with all the images, because it is not emptying the cache on exit.

this all is done in the background and will eat up memory and hd space the converting alone will cause slowdowns because its converting to bmp. instead of leaving it in the found format.

it does not need to move it at all. it only needs to link to it.

why do i say it is mucking up the monkey and the system.

because i jsut spent 45 minutes deleteing every dadblasted bmp in the temp folder. and got over 60 mb's of space back.

thats a muck up caused by it not emptying the cache its self.
and by it converting the images to bmp files needlessly.

It's a feature, embedded in MM by HDD companies trying to sell us 1TB drives for purposes other than illegal downloaded files. Becayse NO ONE need 1TB for legally downloaded music and movies ;)

I disagree with you, my music collection is pushing on 1TB and ALL of it is legally obtained, and my collection is not nearly as large as some I have seen here. :P

Listen folks, Umm, we seem to have strayed off topic.

What about this memory leak issue that rovingcowboy is asking about...

thats not a memory leak, its a temp file/folder situation that doesn't seem to get cleaned up.

a memory leak is when memory (RAM) gets allocated and does not get released when the app is closed.

This cache is used for huge speed improvement in Album Art View Modes. I'll explain : in AA view mode every cover need to be loaded (from tag or file), resized and painted. Reading info about cover storage takes some time, resizing can take very long time (in case original cover is in really big resolution). So for best performance we're using covers cache where covers are already resized, uncompressed (fastest to load) and optimized for fast loading and showing. In future versions we can add any option to disable this cache, but in this stage i don't think it's necessary.

BTW : you can use windows scheduling system for cleaning up temp folder.

I use this.

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Bulletproof, complete, customizable(keep certain cookies, etc.),free.

I have it set to auto nuke everything on windows restart. It does it transparently and completely- even .dat files.

the memory leak i was thinking of was the one in the other thread where they thought they had one dealing with scanning.
but you seen that thread too.

i thought this might be the cause of that.

petrcbr i do use the timed cleanup the point is if monkey is using it at a temp cache then it should be emptied on exit of media monkey. otherwise it is not temp.
and loading uncompressed files is not faster. when you can compress it down to jpg and get it smaller yet better quailty then bmp. because i got them set to " 600 dpi " instead of the lower one i use to have and they load faster and look better. bmp format is only allowed 300 dpi.

possibly the best solution is like an internet browser:

- allow for specfication of size and location of hard drive image cache
- allow for specification of size of memory cache

internet explorer allows for 'temporary internet files' max size and location, firefox allows for both memory and disk cache sizes.

I have no problem with the temp cache, especially if it speeds things up, but why does it have to create a new one every time its opened.

58 replicated cache directories in my temp folder for almost a gig in space (my temp directory is on its own 40gig drive), that ain't right

Use the old and append or start new and delete on exit.

According to the latest MM "4343 Added means to disable Album Art cache via .ini file" but I cannot find that option anywhere.
I looked in mediamonkey.ini & nothing is immediately apparent.
Nothing in options, online help & I looked in this forum.
Does anyone know please?
Many thanks.

I think it's clearly written there:
devs wrote:4343 Added means to disable Album Art cache via .ini file (DontUseCoversCache=1 in [System] section)
So, you just write a new line in the section [System] in your .ini file

Code: Select all

DontUseCoversCache=1
