"My Documents" under Library/Location? What for?

Post by surfer »

Under Library/Location i have en entry "my documents" with a subfolder "music" which again contains a subfolder "music" and endlessly on and on......
I do not have a folder with the name "My Documents" on my PC. This system folder is linked on my PC to a folder with the name "data" in the root of the partition "D:". I do not have any music in "data" and do not scan or monitor this folder.

My music files are in a folder+subfolders of "D:\music".
In "All" under Library/Location/HD:[D:] and "All" under Library/Location/"My Documents" the same files are listed.

When i delete the node "my documents" the whole part of the MM library under Library/Location/HD:("D:\music") also gets deleted.

I do not want to delete and rescan "D:\music" because of my manual playlists pointing to the tracks in "D:\music" which i do not want to lose.

Why do i have the entry "my documents" and how can i get rid of it without affecting the "D:\music"?

I also see My Documents > Music > Music > Music > Music ... ad infinitum, both under Location and in the Sync List.

This is using a clean install of RC1, and a fresh database (not imported from 2.5).

'My Documents'

This folder exists because most users have no idea how to get to their My Documents folders.

That said, perhaps we could incorporate a little more smarts into this so that it wouldn't show up if no such folder exists.

Re. the bug of an infinite number of My Music folders:
-Does this always occur? or only occasionally (some sort of refresh bug)?
-If it always occurs, can you send me your DB?

I can replicate the infinite Music > Music > Music ..... problem by doing the following:

- Do a fresh install of RC1 (although B4 had this problem, too)

- Don't import the MM2.5 database

- Scan a single folder (eg. under D:\Music\Albums\Some_Artist)

The Location > My Documents node appears immediately afterwards, along with its recurring Music > Music > Music ....

EDIT: I wonder if this is related to the fact that, for my Windows username I have changed the My Documents "target path" to a location on my D: drive?

Nah-uh, you dummy ;) It just makes the process of getting there faster. I prefer having a My Documents node instead of My Music. But having a customizable node would be the perfect solution. But I still don't understand why it's in the Library node by default.

I also get this "cascading My Documents" issue (like some of the others in this thread, I also have my My Documents redirected to my D: drive). However, I get an additional issue that for every song that I double click on, I get another "My Documents" in the Location node, which all disappear (except for the original one) when I close and reopen the Location.

I'm using the 1098 build of MM3 BTW.

Any thoughts? I'd rather the My Documents wasn't there at all...

No, that shouldn't affect it supposing the MM programmers use the identifier for My Documents that MS has programmed into the OS. when you change the My Documents folder location you also change that identifier/pointer. %MyDocuments% or some such. %username% is used to insert the active username into a path or whatever they may need it for.

My DB is about 200 MB after "Maintain Library", so i cannot send it, sorry.

Yes, it occurs always. I do not see in this entry of "My Documents" anything else but only 2 entries:
"All"
"music" (this one contains again "All" and "music" recurring infinitely; the name of this entry is NOT "My Music")

The folder "All" contains without any structure all the music files that are physically in the path "D:\music" and are here structured by "genre/artist/album/files".

The system folder "My Documents" has on my PC with WinXP the name "data", the path of it is "D:\data"(you can change it this way by moving all your document files to another folder in the properties of the system folder "My Documents").

I only want to manage the music files by MM and not "My Documents", especially not if it only contains the content of "D:\music" which i already have in the DB anyway.

I doubt that, but I'm sure that it contains Lots of Info.

@Surfer
Especially if its that big Compressing it should make it at least half sized and most online file hosting site allow files up to 100Mb
