MM + LAN + Burning CD = DRM Error? [4390]

Post by KenBuzz »

I've got MM installed and running on my home network. The file server downstairs is host to my household's music library - 15GB of MP3 and WMA files, none of them DRM protected.

MM runs fine everywhere. I can browse the library, pick songs, play them, rearrange them, just about everything MM is supposed to do. Everything, that is, except burning CDs.

Every time we try to burn a CD on a 'puter on our LAN, we get a DRM Protection error that prevents us from doing that. When I try to burn the exact same CD on the downstairs server, using the same files, it burns just fine. The only difference I can discern is that the files aren't local to the LAN-based 'puters upstairs, but I don't see how that would trigger a DRM error... particularly since the MP3/WMA files aren't DRM-protected in the first place.

We've been working around it by dragging the playlist from MM to WMP and burning the CD from there.... confirms that there's nothing screwy about the 'puter and that the files are indeed DRM-free. It would be great if we could burn the same CD on the same 'puter in MM (just like we can on the server downstairs).

Is there something terribly obvious that I'm missing here? Pls be kind, I'm a MM n00b.

You might want to try to create a debug log for this.

Are you using the free MediaMonkey or do you have MediaMonkey Gold? If you are using the free version you might need to get a new LAME encoder is the MediaMonkey one only works for 30 days (search Google for a unlimited LAME encoder).

Thanks, I'll look into creating a debug log.

This is the free version - just installed it this week, though it looks certain I'll be going Gold soon. I don't believe the issue pertains to the encoder... I can burn CDs at will on the computer where the MP3/WMA files physically exist, it's when I do exactly the same function on a networked 'puter, and the issue shows up as a false DRM error (none of the files in question are DRM-protected).

This was me responding, I forgot to log-in first. And this is a CD burning issue, not a CD ripping issue. I shouldn't expect that the encoder was part of this equation.

Have you tried to use cache network tracks in Burning wizard?

Interesting, that's not at all what my Burning Wizard looks like. I'd post a thumbnail but I'm firewalled and can't upload to Imageshack. I see only three checkboxes... (1) Enable buffer underrun protection, (2) Eject media after the burn process, and (3) On the fly audio burning. I'm using MM version 3.02.1134 (Standard Edition)

Small A: It's an Audio CD.

Okay, I've upgraded to MM Gold, but the same problem. I am attempting to burn an Audio CD using non-DRM source files that are located on my home LAN.

A - When I try to burn an Audio CD from my downstairs computer, where the source MP3/WMA files are physically located - success!
B - When I try ot burn the EXACT SAME Audio CD from an upstairs computer, where the very same MP3/WMA files are being accessed via my LAN - DRM error. The files are *not* DRM-protected, so this appears to be a false positive.
C - My workaround right now is AFTER the upstairs MM complains about DRM, I drag the playlist from MM to WMP and burn the CD there. It works perfectly.

I see no "network caching" option under the MM Audio CD burner. The checkboxes are there for the MM MP3 CD burner, but I'm trying to burn an Audio CD playable on any system. MM can access and play all of my music files across my LAN, the ONLY thing the upstairs computer seems incapable of doing is buring a CD, somehting that WMP upstairs can do fine. The downstairs MM is flawless in all regards, and it's the same version of MM on both systems.

The next thing I'm gonna try is the "Virtual CD", but I'm going to have to read up on that - I haven't a clue what it is or how it can help me.

Lowlander asked me to submit a debug log. If the Virtual CD is a dead end, how do I create that?

KenBuzz,
I guessed that it is maybe Audio CD which yet do not have same option as Data CD burning, but Caching Files from network option when burning Audio CDs is added to Our To-Do list, so your problem will be solved.

Okay, thanks. I'll continue with my workaround until then.
