I have had several issues and I will tell you what I did to fix each, in my case.
FYI - I am using MM Gold ver. 3.0.2.1134 and Windows XP sp 2.
Problem 1: When synching through MM the device would intermittently disconnect and give me a "Write Delayed Failure", and lock up, but only through MM, not iTunes.
In order to fix this I had to right click on the iPod drive, through file explorer, and then click properties, and polices, Click "Enable write caching on the disk" (more info here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330174). I then restored the iPod through iTunes, but looking back I am not sure if this needed to be done. Many times when iTunes would tell me to restore the iPod I think I only needed to rebuild the database through MM.
Problem 2: MM would tell me that it could not download a song, i.e. "Problem copying song to iPod" error. The MM and the iPod would lock up.
To fix this I would have disconnect the iPod and then reconnect and click "rebuild device database". be sure to check the "Update Database Based On All Track Changes (Takes Longer)" option. Then let it do it's thing. This led to problem #3.
Problem 3: After rebuilding the device database the full number of songs would not show up on the iPod. for example I have 16,638 songs on the iPod but only 5,834 would show up.
To fix this issue I connected the iPod through iTunes. Just let it find the iPod and then safely remove. The correct number of songs on the iPod now show up.
I hope this info helps some. I have been struggling with my iPod 160GB and MM since Christmas and I think I finally have it working properly.

UPDATE
I figured out my iPod was broken (connector issue causing the "Delayed Write Failure") but now I have this issue:
