Help - Multiple Instances of MM when access from Explorer

Post by Slingers »

Hi,

** Major problem **

Problem is when I choose multiple tracks in Windows Explorer and right click and choose "Play in media monkey" each track opens a different instance of MM. So If a choose 20 tracks I get 20 instances of MM opening one after the other which slows my computer to a crawl.

Been using MM for years and this problem has just occurred.

I can not work out how to stop this and put it back to the way it was, i.e. select 20 tracks, select play, 1 instance of MM with 20 tracks in the play-list window.

Tried so far without success:
= Select one track and then select next using "Play Next";
= Using "Play Next" instead of "Play In";
= Using "Play last";
= Select one track at a time;
= Re-associate file types in MM;
= Re-associate file types in Windows (default program);
= Check setting in real player and ensure no conflict with file type association visible;
= Check settings in MM options (can not see anything which seems wrong);
= Mark option to only use one instance of MM;
= Over install of MM;
= Clean install of MM after complete un-install;
= Searched the MM forum :-?
Recent changes (Last 5 days):
= Upgrade to MM 3.0.3.1183;
= Install of Real-player 11.0.3 and associate all VIDEO files to use in place of Windows Media Player;
= Updates from Microsoft (Vista=KB955020, KB952709, KB950582, KB951978) plus others for malicious software removal tool, Outlook 2007 and Windows Defender.
System:
Duel Core Pentium Running Windows Vista SP1.

I can not think of anything else I can do to solve this issue, any help appreciated :wink:

check the monkey's ini file and see if it is set to read only. that will stop the options from changing from multiple instance's to only one, if that is not it then you truly have a bug i would go to the beta forum get the last beta release of 3.03 83 that is the debug version, unless you have it already. then try to get monkey to crash the same time you are loading multiple songs in the list, do it online that way the autodebug log will pop up and be sent when you get it to crash, that will show what is going on with your system when you are sending the songs to the now playing. there was a post some place that was made by rusty telling how to manual crash monkey to make the bug report log. i don't remember where you will have to search for it.

Thanks, I now have some more information which might help someone identify what I need to do to resolve this issue.

I have spend most of the morning trying to resolve this. I un-installed both Real Player and Media Monkey, deleted all files in both "Program Files" and "User" folders. I then deleted every reference to both MM and Real-player from the registry :-? :( :-? .

Re-installed MM - the program worked OK. :D

BUT - Resetting the options back to their original setting and inputted license key took me BACK TO SQUARE ONE - the software now opens and plays 20 times if I select 20 mp3's :x :x

In the options I have basically added my scan folders and changed the skin to "Blue Glass". Could the skin be causing this problem?

Anyway - this time I have an error message for you techno types and it states....

Code: Select all

There was a problem querying the database

Error executing SQL statement "Update Songs SET Playbackpos=2489 WHERE id=-1"
unable to open database file (14,14)
If I press ignore the "Playbackpos" value changes to 890, 896 and 128389.

I have 39,000 tracks loaded in to Mediamonkey (the whole families audio collection) so a solution is a real must here guys - anyone can help without me loading the beta version as outlined above? :(

Right - this is most definitely a BUG. :(

I resolved the issue by deleting the MM ini config file. MM then started responding as it should regarding opening files. :)

From a clean ini file I then went through each configurable I changed in the options and tested the software to see when the fault occurred. The fault re-manifested itself when I unticked "Allow just one instance of MediaMonkey". If this is unticked, each time you select a track in windows explorer it opens in a new window. So if you select 20 tracks at the some time you get 20 MediaMonkey's opening at once !

This did not occur in earlier versions of Monkey.

I have also noticed another issue which is, if you do not have MM open but want to play a few tracks direct from explorer, in Vista, no matter how many tracks you select to play MM, when it opens, only plays one of them. There also appears to be no rule as to which one it plays. I therefore think that the bug is connected with some changes which have just been made to Vista with the new patches mentioned earlier. Once the software is open (and if you have the tick box above set) MM opens the tracks from explorer using the right click as it used to.

The reason this is important to me is that when I download new albums I load them into a temporary folder which is not part of the MM Library. I can then set all the tags, attach album art and ensure the filenames are correct before I load them into my library folder. I do it this way because I have a batch file re-namer which can build the filename from the ID Tags, add artist names on-bulk, remove underscores and just generally ensure the filenames make sense. Once I have done all this I then load it into the folder for MM to suck into its library using the scan option.

The error you get is error when MM can't access already locked (for writing) Database and retry should fix the issue it is more warning than error, but we are certainly look in to it.
