Sync everything but HOLIDAY (Genre)

Post by antiduplicity »

I have an 80gig iPod classic, which holds all my music. I want everything but my Christmas music on that iPOD ten months out of the year. All my Christmas music has a genre of 'holiday.' In the sync properties there does not seem to be a way to select on Genre. I have over 1500 Christmas songs, so selecting the albums or songs would be painful. I just want Holiday off and in November, turn holiday on and in January turn holiday off and have my iPOD updated accordingly.

Grace and Peace,

That is rather easy. Simply create an auto-playlist that includes all songs and excludes the songs with the holiday-genre. Then configure your iPod to sync only that playlist.

There is one simple problem with that solution. I have a dozen other playlists. For example, I have a playlist that contains several of my favorite singers. A few of them do Christmas albums. So I cannot make a single playlist of all these singers using the ANY option and exclude 'holiday' with your solution.

I need a solution where 'holiday' is not considered for anything. In itunes, I can just uncheck all the holiday items and they are ignored for every playlist and every search.

Thanks

Hi there,
as a solution, you can create an Autoplaylist that adds other playlists. You can find that option in the advanced pane of the new Autoplaylist creation. After that, you can screen out the genres you do not want. I hope this helps you.
Regards.

I am sorry, I do not see where I can create other auto playlists from inside the autoplaylist creator under the advance tab.

This does seem like a great deal of work. Why can't they just add Genre to the all-music section of the program?

If I create my 21 playlists inside another playlist then how do I get holiday back during the holiday season?

As you can see from the image, the first option is to include other "Playlists". So you can create playlist A with all the songs you want (it can be complete library), and AutoPlaylist B should filter Holiday songs. From this point on, you have three options:
  • Modify the Autoplaylist B (the one you are synching), so during November-January it does not filter out "Holidays"
  • Sync playlist A during Christmans, sync playlist B during the rest of the year
  • Sync both playlists, and do a shuffle play (I suppose that is what you are doing, and I hope the iPod is capable of that!) on either playlist A or B depending on the season
If you try option 1 or 2, please be aware that you might need to select the option to delete tracks not found in the synchronization playlist.
I hope any of these solutions suits you. It is not automatic, but at least option 3 needs far less interaction, something you might be able to endure.
Note: I do not see the point on not doing the genre filtering if you are browsing your music in the iPod by Author and Album, so that is the reason I suppose you are interested in shuffle play all the time.

I get it, thanks.
I am new to MediaMonkey and understand that it is amazingly powerful, so thanks for the image and the explaination.

God Bless
