New browser: Google chrome

Post by Big_Berny »

Hi guys,
don't know if I have to post this in the offitopic forum but since it's a news... :)

Google just released it's new web browser. You can download it here: http://www.google.com/chrome

It's quite fast and has a nice feature: All tabs are seperate threads. So it's also no problem if one tab crashes because the other stay open and the security is higher. It also passes ACID2 and ACID3... Worth a look IMHO. :)

I hope I get not banned since I really didn't get one cent of Google for this post. ;)

Post by dypsis »

I have been using it.

This is the fastest browser that I have ever used. It is so fast. :)

It's fast, but be aware that it's currently a beta meant for testing purposes. The only thing is that it seems resource hungry. Just open a few tabs and go to the Windows Task Manager. A fun sight for all!

Download Google Chrome.

Right, forgot to say that. Here the ram usage is sometimes higher and sometimes lower than Opera.

Which means that the task manager needs an overhaul (haven't seen Vista's though) as this isn't very useful. 20 chrome.exe processes doesn't help much more than to fill the screen.

I do like this multi-threaded approach of Google and think it's very useful. The cartoon also indicates that this lead to higher initial overhead, but lower memory requirements later on (after many open/closed tabs Chrome should use less resources than other browsers).

Well, the security flaws I've seen so far are a bit ridiculous. IMHO it's only part of the hype about the browser.

Example: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/se ... chrome.php
If somebody downloads and executes the file then it's not the browser to blame.

Another security problem which also has been detected in safari is, that the browser saves files to the desktop where the security level is lower in Vista. First the developer say thats not the case anymore. Second this is a OS problem. Third if you have a antivirus and don't download and execute malware then you don't have any problems.

I don't know but these aren't really big bugs. At least not for minimally experienced users.

One does need to keep in mind that it is a beta with these security flaws. As Berny has said, it needs user interaction.

If you are wanting latest snapshot builds of Chromium (Chromium is the base Open source builds Google Chrome is built on, ) go here http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/snap ... um-rel-xp/

They install differently as they are not the Official Google branded and patched builds.

Despite it being a beta an organization as large as Google shouldn't reintroduce old known bugs when launching a new product. This flaw has been fixed, but Google decided to launch Chrome with on old version of Webkit (the renderer also used in Safari). The bug that crashes Chrome is also very important due to the premise that Chrome couldn't be crashed as each tab runs a separate process. Only due to the fact that Google emphasized this so much at launch it's something that shouldn't have happened.

The only reason why we maybe shouldn't be so harsh is that Chrome probably got launched to early due to Google leaking the Chrome cartoon prematurely.

And my huge problem with Chrome is that since I installed it GoogleUpdate keeps calling home constantly. As I manually allow/deny access to the internet this is a huge annoyance. I won't permanently allow it and I don't want to disable access (I do like to be able to update) so my firewall keeps requesting permission for the GoogleUpdater.

I haven't found any problems so far, although I may not surf as heavily as some. As long as you have a trusted anti-virus you should be fine. My only problem is the inability to simply "open" a downloaded document (or mmip :P), unless you point the save as to the temp folder every time, but that's just annoying..
