@hatn - thanks for posting these lists, I'm glad you like the script.
1) Unfortunately at the moment you can't use any of the list operator (,+-*) in the genres themselves, but I hope to rectify this in the next version, possibly with the use of brackets, although I've not decided yet.
2) No matter what your custom fields are called, you should always use "Custom#" in the lists.
3) I'm not sure what you mean by "one can always run a list with changes" - can you clarify for me?
4) I do have a version for release dates planned, but it's one item on a very long list!

@onenonymous - yes this sounds like a sensible suggestion, it's now on my (very long!) list.

I never heard of a genre with brackets so i think this might be great

e.g.: Trip-hop is allways replaced by Trip-Hop, Rock And Roll by Rock & Roll, Indie Pop by Indie. I know that this is possible with the "=", and probably with regexp, (I dont think Personaltagenhancer changes genres) but something like that would make things easier. At this moment my genrelist would exceed the limit of characters. I don't know a lot about scripts and how difficult this would be, just an idea...

Next to genres, dates have allways been my biggest taggingproblem, I read suggestions for date-scripts before, and in case someone is wondering what people would like,... Off topic, you think last fm might be used for a similar script for album art?

One other thought I had - give the user the ability to prioritize tag source - eg. first try track mode, if no tags found in lastFM to match white/black list, then try the Album mode, and finally if still no genres found, try the Artist mode.

@hatn - I am certainly looking to try and get around the character limit in the next version, although I haven't worked out exactly how yet. My "Batch Art Finder" script already has the option to get artwork from Last.Fm - it's the "ws.audioscrobbler.com" option in the source dropdown. Personally I prefer to use the album mode, as I prefer to have all tracks within an album to have the same genre, as this works better with my mp3 player.

@onenonymous - Whilst I agree this idea of priorities is a nice one, I tried to do this in the last version and failed miserably. The way the script currently queues the requests it is not possible to mix them up. That's not to say that I won't try again in the future!

While I haven't looked into your code to see how it queue's them, how about:
1) Queue and tag by track as currently done, this time each track without matching Genres is added to a new song list
2) Once all tracks are examined, re-run on the new song list of un-tagged tracks, this time based on the album. Again, add un-tagged tracks to another new song list
3) Finally, run the new song list tagging based on artist.

Current beta of MM 1207 doesn't play nice with genre finder. When activating the script, it gives infinite errors about "Error executing script event" and eventually MM crashes.

My issue is that users make up their own genres for Last.fm which really makes no sense for this script to work properly. Barbra Streisand is not a genre. There must be a better source.

I thought so too, until I discovered the white lists and black lists. These restrict the entries that are allowed. Start reading through this thread from the beginning and you'll see discussions about their use. There are also some users white lists posted for you to use as a base for your own tagging efforts.

Hey trixmoto, awesome script... thank you for the hard work,...

I'm having the same problem using beta 1207. I setup my settings in options(I check 'run for current song'), and I have tried both for tracks and albums...

As soon as I hit ok to exit options, and start a track, the script runs like it should, but then I instantly get an error saying..."GenreFinder: Sorry, the progress bar has been lost", and then MM freezes(song still playing, but frozen) for about 10-15 seconds and then MM shuts down.

Hope the detail helps with the coding... thanks again, this is my first attempt at using this script, and it seems like it could be very useful!hope you get it worked out..

A fundamental change has been made (in 1205 onwards) to the way that scripts are executed. This means that a number of scripts will probably not function correctly until they've been reworked. It's on my list!

I've been looking around for some nice lists of genres, but I still don't see a way to organise this jungle... Albumtags for less known albums are quite a disaster on Lastfm, and even the "bigger" artists are very difficult to tag rationally. First of all, there's the genre - subgenre problem. Faboy Slim can be tagged as Electronic, Dance, Bigbeat... Rap vs Hip-Hop, same problem...
Second problem: last fm. Rock & roll, rock and roll, rock 'n roll, rock n' roll, rock n roll, rock 'n' roll,... seem to be different genres... I think lastfm should consider the use of white lists as well Or maybe users should be able to "discuss" correct genres for every artist wikipedia-style. Anyway, I heared last.fm

Great script - thanks Trixmoto. I have lots of different Genres within my collection - no consistency with naming standards - tracks missing genres etc. Some cleanup work is required and I am hoping to use this script to further improve the tagging quality of my music collection. To speed up the genre tagging process is there a 'common' white and black lists? I read the posts and someone created a spreadsheet but the link no longer works. Thanks.

Would it be possible to use other sources? Two possibilities:
-wikipedia: more correct information but not that much info, certainly not for individual tracks (and even albums)
-www.allmusic.com: very qualitative source. They have one genre and styles for every artist/album. Genre would be eg. electronic (they never use more then one genre) style would be eg. "Big-Beat; Electrofunk". Styles are very correct. (Even for more exotic music: styles like Cajun; Zydeco and Zouglou are used properly.)
Only "problem" is that they use Pop/Rock as one big genre. (So Slayer and Brittney Spears have the same genre.) But it's very easy to split that into Pop or Rock manually...(Or just delete the crappy pop music ) I think i will use the "genrefield" in mediamonkey for all the styles (rarely >3) and put the main genre (never >1) in a custom-field.
Other big advantage: the use of moods, instruments, country, years active, themes, label, release date, record date, group members, influenced by, similar artists, albumart and some nice comments. For artists, albums and tracks.
Eg. for the use of genre / style / mood:
Arcade fire - Neon bible
genre: Pop/rock
styles: Post-Rock / Indie Rock
mood: Dramatic, Earnest,....
Theme: Road Trip, Introspection,...

Last.fm might know a little more artists, but on the other hand, "smaller" artists are never tagged correctly on lastfm.
