Re: Backup 5.2 [MM2+3]

Post by Desertway »

I have recently begun using MM extensively to manage my much beloved collection, so this script is a great gift! I have a couple of questions:

1. Should I have both abackup.vbs and abackup2.vbs in my scripts folder?

2. Sometimes - but not always - I get the following error:

Abackup2.vbs
line 58
char7
permission denied
800A0046
Microsoft VBScript runtime error

I'm on an XP administrator account.

Thanks.

Yes, "ABackup.vbs" is used to automatically backup on startup and "ABackup2.vbs" is used to automatically backup on shutdown - that's just my unimaginative naming of files! :)

Well "permission denied" certainly implies that something is blocking the script, if not Windows itself then maybe an anti-virus or malware program of some sort? They can often get a little upset when VBS files try to run externally, as the "ABackup2.vbs" file does.

Ok. Thanks. It only happens occasionally, and the script seems to go on and work anyway.

OK,

I have a pretty new install of MM. Just installed the backup script, went into config dialog altered a few thgs,

Every time I try to run backup I get a popup box with following:

"Error happened during script execution: Overflow: 'siz'"

Nothing else appears to happen.

Just installed backup to latest beta version of media monkey.

Get following error when I try to run it:

Error #6 - microsoft\VBScript\runtime error
Overflow: 'siz'
File: "C:\Program Files\MediaMonkey\Scripts\Auto\Backup.vbs Line: 881 Column: 14

Any ideas?

OK, I am really hating this script. It ought to just do something out of the box with all default settings.

I just wasted another hour of my life trying to get past "backup cancelled because output folder already exists" .
Why does it do that? In short - I give up.

In the time wasted I could've written my own cmd script to just make a copy of the Application Data\MediaMonkey folder and other folders in Program Files/Media Monkey to some backup location. In fact I think I'll just do that.

There is a lot of information on how to use this great script here in the forum thread. And the "search this topic" is very powerful. I just did a search for "already exists" and I immediately found this explanation from Trixmoto.
Did you try this?
trixmoto wrote:Ticking the "overwrite previous backup" option will stop you getting error messages if the output path already exists. You would want this ticked to update an existing backup folder.

Ticking the "cleanup output path" option will delete all the files in the existing backup folder. You would want to do this if you have deleted files from your MM folder (uninstalled a script or skin maybe) and don't want these files to remain in your backup folder. Be careful though because this will empty all files from the output path, which has caused some people pain before when specifying a path that doesn't just contain MM files, hence the checkbox.

And here is a guide to the settings box that RobertSmith put together.

I hope that helps you. I truly believe this is the best script for MM.

Thanks for trying to help guys - appreciated,

Yes I have worked through the guide, yes I did find that info re overwrite prev backups, and I had already ticked that check box.

Unfortunately I still get the error :-? ..

I commented out the check in the script (set over=1). Now I get
Error line 454 char 9, Invalid procedure call or argument.
Offending line: >> Call fso.CreateFolder(zpath)

I bet zpath is blank. Not up with debugging scripts (Im a C++ kinda guy myself 8) ). Surely i dont need to?
Surely its something simple? . Perhaps I have version incompatibility probs? Am running MM 3.1.1.1261 on winxp, latest SPs.

The problem with spending a lot of time on this is I keep thinking I can just write a simple cmd script to copy subdirs under MM and appsettings/mediamonkey to another drive. Surely that gives me a pretty good backup anyway?

Cheers
Eric.

How about a little less time insulting the person who took the time to create the script and give the relevant info in order to resolve your problem. But from what you posted it appears you have set the script to save to a location that exists and you do not have the overwrite feature checked. Can you post a screen shot of your settings so that someone can help you resolve this? But if you are more interested in re-inventing the wheel, have at it... But being a programmer yourself, an options sheet should not be that difficult to figure out.  And given the many uses that this script offers to different users, I find it unbelievable that an "out of the box" option is possible...

nynaevelan - you may have noticed I took a much more conciliatory tone in last msg - I admit prev msg was a bit harsh. I realise its completley free community stuff, and true, it appears to be very flexible indeed.

Agreed wouldnt be hard to debug, just cant be bothered - instead I already have the tools lying around here for re-inventing the wheel yet again - heck I'm knee-deep in reinvented wheels  - another one can't hurt, so I'll just leave it at that.

@moi - I think this means you have a database so large that the mathematical functions I am using just can't cope. I'll try to sort this out in the next version, but may I ask how large your MM.DB file is?

@Sobriquet - the default settings used to work pretty well, but some people who didn't specify a sensible "output path" ended up losing thousands of files they didn't want to. Now the default settings are paranoid and force you to set it up sensibly before it will do anything. There are extra settings which I don't like, but have added as a security measure. Also you've given me a line number but as there are 3 files which perform the backup it would be useful to know which file the line was from.

@nynaevelan - thanks for your support. Yes this script is designed to be powerful and flexible, which can be a lethal combination in the wrong hands.

TM:

Do you know if there are any adverse affects of backing up a db in Vista and restoring it in XP, particularly the registry settings??

I honestly don't know. I would have thought that all the files would be the same, although maybe in a different location. Maybe do a backup of both XP and Vista and then compare the registry files to see if there are any structural differences.
