Better yet - I coded a VLC player input plugin (MM2VLC) which works great. 
I found vid4wa to work terribly, crashed and froze a lot.
I haven't yet finished an installer for it - but I can certainly drop the scripts and plug-ins etc. for anyone interested to install themselves if they like.
