Adding an extra genre to selected songs

Post by jp10 »

I like to add an extra genre to a list of songs without overwriting their already excisting genres, if the list of files have the same genres already then its no problem, but what if they are not the same ?

1) No problem if it's like this

song A - Top40; 80's
song B - Top40; 80's
etc.

2) This becomes a problem

song A - Top40; 80's
song B - Soul; 90's
song C - R&B; 80's
etc.

Anyone a good idea or sollution?

Open up the Genre tree node. Highlight the tracks you want to add a Genre to, drag them over the Genre you want to add in the tree, and drop them there while holding CTRL. That will append the genre you dropped them on, to the end of the Genre list for the tracks.

Dammmm I forgot pressing the CTRL key, 18000 songs with a new genre, lost their original genres....
Stupid me :)

Tried it with pressing the CTRL key, works fine!

Thanks for your input !

@jp10
Welcome to MM, I'm sorry for your overwritten genres, but as you already noted behavior I added this behavior to our to-do list just in case there should be raised need for implementation http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=6273

Isn't that already covered by the "Modifying more than 50 tracks at once" warning?

Yes you are right. Tools -> Options -> General -> Confirmations -> Modifying more than 50 tracks at once handles that

That warning doesn't really protect from this potential data loss however. As if someone is dragging 50 files to the tree, they should know that it's going to modify them. The issue here was, the user forgot to hold CTRL, so they overwrote the data instead of appending. If CTRL isn't held down, a warning could be provided specifying "This action will replace (field) on # files. Do you want to continue?" so that someone has the opportunity to realize it will replace the genre for instance, instead of adding it. Maybe?
