iPod plays some songs when connected, otherwise doesn't

Post by ashwinmudigonda »

I have a 5th generation iPod and I am using MM 3.2. Some songs have begun to skip on my iPod and I tried the entire gamut of resetting and restoring options. It won't work. What is weird is that when I connect the iPod to MM and access the faulty tracks, they play fine. But when I disconnect it and play them, they skip. Even this skipping is not uniform. Some songs skip right at start, others play a bit and then skip.

What gives? What should I do?

these are my Device settings for the iPod:

<checked> Auto-sync as soon as...
<unchecked> Automatically unmount device..
<checked> Delete tracks that aren't...
<checked> Confirm deletion..
<unchecked> Auto-sync tracks from the device...

Sync tracks to <Artist:12>-<Album:12>\<Track#>
<unchecked> Sync all album art..
<checkeD> Copy album art...
<unchecked> Remove images...
<checkeD> use only the first genre..
<unchecked> use only the first value...

Compatibility settings
<checkeD> Force itunes-style...

On rebuild device database:
Update database based on newly added tracks

<checked> Allow devices filesystem browsing.

Try to delete them and re-sync, see if it makes any difference.

Firstly, when I tried it on one song, it didn't work. Secondly, there are so many of them exhibiting this behavior, i doubt I can catch them all.

I don't know, I have an iPhone and iPod mini that don't exhibit this problem. Maybe it is your filename destination, I see you use:
<Artist:12>-<Album:12>\<Track#>

Because of the way the iPod filesystem works, all filenames can only be 4 characters long (i.e. Thre.mp3). Maybe you using <Artist:12> is forcing the filenames to not be written correctly. In the past I've used masks: <Artist> - <Title> and: <Title> with success, maybe it's worth trying. The only downside is that you'll probably be prompted to delete everythinga and resync everything.

Thanks. But I changed this tag only after reading a post in MM's forums where someone had a similar issue. My tags were initially as you had suggested and the problem was still there.

I would advise you to still consider at least removing the upper folder level, the iPod uses its own filesystem and you adding additional folders to the confusion can't help.

That is so weird, man! Rebuilding the database with the default tag fixed it. I have no clue why it worked! Thanks, but.
