Woo hooo! FLAC and auto-convert, I love it...

Post by Anubis »

I have just been playing with A4's flac encoder and auto-convert when sync'ing.
I ripped a CD to FLAC[8], then sync'd these FLAC files to the hard disk using MP3(192) and it worked great.
Now, I'm not ready to let A4 at my "production" database or my H340, but it's tempting....
The only downside, is now I will have rip my 300+ CD's to flac...

Great work dev's!

Now, if only conversion were instantaneous :D I guess that's not MM's problem, though. I just need to get me a supercomputer!

Or can try saying the following words after starting the synch process:

Abra katabra, open sesame (repeat 4000 times)
The synch process sould finish much faster this way

It's too slow for me.

auto-conversion speed

Post by Rusty (Guest) »

If your machine is really high end, the speed issue probably wouldn't bother you too much.

My regular machine is a Sempron 3000, and for me it's been of real benefit--now I'm able to sync all of my collection to my iPod (including the OGG/FLAC/MPC files that I have).

So yeah--if my entire collection was flac and then I was synching/autoconverting it all with my current hardware, it would probably be a bit slower than I'd want, but given my current situation, it's a lifesaver.

Rusty, as you have an iPod, I'm interested in how MM 2.5 and the auto-convert feature will handle ratings and, time played and last played fields from the iPod back to MM's database.

For example, if I have a track called song.flac and it gets converted to song.mp3 when it is transferred to the iPod. Then on the iPod I set or change it's rating and listen to it (the .mp3 file). Will the rating and played info be sync'd back to the .flac file?

I don't have an iPod, but I am thinking about getting one purely because of it's rating setting and last played/times played stat's.

Using auto-conversions doesn't influence this at all, i.e. yes, playcount and rating will properly synchronize.

I meant that it takes me like six times as long to convert using the Monkey than say, dBPoweramp or such.

Cool!
I'll be getting an iPod Nano as soon as 2.5 is stable...

Thanks

As for speed, there shouldn't be any difference among applications using Lame engine to create mp3s, the speed depends only on settings (bitrate, CBR/VBR, quality, ...).
